Red iron oxide vs black iron oxide

I have not found much information regarding use of iron oxide, red or black, other than thermite and as a high temp catalyst.

 

I was wondering if I could substitute black iron oxide for red in whistle mix and for star formulas that call for red iron oxide.

 

A star formula I was looking at is:

 

Winokur #20

Potassium Nitrate 48
Sulfur 17
Magnalium Granular -200 mesh 12
Charcoal Airfloat 10
Sodium Bicarbonate 5
Iron (III) Oxide, red 4
Dextrin 4

Thanks. It looks like red and black are essentially interchangable.
