Jordan Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 I was on the forums the other day and saw a green tailed star formula that I really liked. Problem is I can't get ahold of KCLO3 and REALLY want to make a star like this for a bowtie or horsetail shell. If you know any comps that are KCLO4 based i'd love to hear them. Thanks All, Jordan
asdercks Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 emerald green is a really nice! Barium Nitrate 50 Parlon 18 MgAl (-325 mesh) 12 KCLO4 8 Sulfur 5 Charcoal Airfloat 5 Dextrin 5 Red Gum 2
Mumbles Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Well, to be fair, that formula shouldn't have a tail if he made it right. It only has a tail because he poorly ground the charcoal. Take any green formula you like and try adding 5-10% coarse charcoal and you'll probably get something that looks similar.
Jordan Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Since I do not have access to the proper hardwoods and simply do not have the facilities to make my own charcoal would there be any way to increase the amount of sparks without adding so much airfloat charcoal that it degrades on the perc based color? Thanks All, Jordan
TYRONEEZEKIEL Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Don't add more airfloat. You won't get the trails you are wanting. Airfloat simply doesn't have the particle size to maintain a burning ember for long enough. A TLUD cooker is no more difficult or dangerous to have than a backyard grill. If you can get a hold of some Ti, you can get a spark trail. It won't be fire dust colored, but it will be silver.

Thanks All, JordanGet the facilities... all you need is an old can that can be sealed, and a fire. Or try ordinary bbq charcoal for a start. Use your imagination and don't expect things to come cheap, fast and easy. welcome to pyrotechnics
Jordan Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 It's not like I can't get the facilities to make charcoal. I'd love to make my own charcoal. It's just that the HOA in my neighborhood does not approve and would probably fine me 200$ every time I did it for "excessive 'pollution'" there always trying to find a way to squeeze money out of the residents. Yours in Flames, Jordan
nater Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Are you not allowed to use a charcoal grill?! Some of those HOA way overstep their bounds. It is one thing to collect dues to maintain a common playground and get the streets plowed, but another to force homeowners into silly rules. We intentionally moved into a neighborhood without a HOA for those vary reasons.
Mumbles Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I should point out that if you're not allowed to use a charcoal grill, they may not be pleased about the manufacture of explosives either. Also, you can purchase coarse charcoal, or just get a bag of lumpwood charcoal and smash up your own.
Jordan Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 They don't really care about what you do inside your house or garage they only care about how it affects curb apeal or whether it might bother neighbors I.e. excessive smoke, unkept grass, etc.
nater Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 See, my neighbors think the smoke from my grill smells good. Granted, cooking charcoal in TLUD does not smell like much of anything, but there is no more smoke than grilling or burning a fire pit.
