Ok so I am considering making a bigger mill and want some help with the jars.

I have a large amount of 8 inch PVC pipe however I have never been able to find someone with ends for anything larger than 4 inch.

I also have an old 70cc quad that doesn't run anymore, so I'm thinking of using the tires for jars. The tires are about 17 centimeters wide and have a diameter of about 37 centimeters, so they have a volume of about 18 liters.

Now I am some what unsure of the best way to prepare these tires, this is what I had in mind.

First take the rim out, than put a solid disk of plywood that has a radius about 3 centimeters larger than the radius of the hole for the rim, stick it inside the tire, drill holes through the side of the tire and then through the wood, and use brass bolts to bolt the wood to the tire. On the other side stick in a second plywood disk (again with a larger radius) with the center cutout and bolt it to the tire in the same way. Then take a third piece of plywood that has a radius about 3 centimeters larger than the hole in the second piece of plywood and drill holes through it and the second piece of wood and then using brass bolts and wingnuts attach it, this would be the lid.

I understand that I didn't explain that very well so here is a picture of what I'm blabbering on about.

So would this work? Col ;)

Yes exactly like that, well a little smaller.

If you have much of a charge it seems like it would be very heavy. But lots of nascar star rollers are in use and similar.

Holy Crap! I was thinking of using those plastic coffee cans! I really liked the ice of a bigger tumbler and also of dedicated tumblers. What a wonderful way to NOT have to worry about cross contamination of chemicals. I want one for Kn03, one for AL, and one for Pot Perc! This really looks like a smart answer, and I think most any old ATV tires would do. I have a friend that is changing out his ATV tires soon, that would give me a set of 4! - Heck, that leaves one for magic pixie dust!

Milling metals like Aluminum, even by themselves is not the wisest move for the beginner. It can be done, but it is still risky. When oxygen is introduced to finely divided metals, they can generate enough heat from the rapid oxidization to ignite. You certainly do not want to experience this.

FlareLauncher, what do you mean by magic pixie dust?

I would take that as flash? Many people give flash all sorts of silly names so they don't have to actually say flash. You don't even think about milling flash unless you have a death wish and a large life insurance policy. I'm hoping you meant something else that I didn't 'get'.

Thanks for the confirmation guys.

My guess is that magic pixie dust didn't mean anything in particular. Also FlareLauncher if you do make one of these make sure you use brass bolts as they are completely non sparking.

Stainless would work if you can't find the brass hardware. Make sure it is stainless steel and not just zinc plated steel.

Bob, CORRECT on the magic pixie dust, as I will NOT mill flash. Hell, I'm still scared to even attempt to produce flash at all, and until I figure out a real need for it have decided to table that altogether! When I mill AL, I plan to; 1. Do it in VERY small batches, and 2. Add charcoal to desensitize it to O2. I have enough 'excitement' in my real job, I'm happy with a less stressful hobby!
