kpknd Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) Just heard on the news about palcohol (powdered alcohol), first hing I thaught was.....Rocket Fuel! Edited April 22, 2014 by kpknd
2902THUNDER Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 From what I've found out powdered alcohol is nothing new, just that a new company Palcohol has tried to get it approved to sell it. I'm not entirely sure about the chemistry behind it however it seems to be alcohol in really tiny capsules on a molecular level. I'm not sure if it's flammable after being changed from liquid ethanol to part ethanol part Cyclodextrin. Ethanol is already used a rocket fuel, so I suppose it's possible. Have a look at,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_powderhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclodextrinhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid-propellant_rocket Anyone else have any ideas?
Mumbles Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 This makes more sense. About all I found was that it was alcohol absorbed into a carbohydrate. It really depends on how much alcohol is absorbed per weight. If it's not a lot, you'd be left with mostly just a sugar rocket essentially with a little kick.
FrankRizzo Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 (edited) I was reading the other day, that a ratio of about 3.5-4:1 tapioca maltodextrin to liquid by volume (or higher) is what's needed to keep it in a basically powdered form (i.e. 1oz of 98% grain alcohol would be need a little under half a cup of maltodextrin). It would certainly be an interesting experiment. Edited April 25, 2014 by FrankRizzo
WSM Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 This makes more sense. About all I found was that it was alcohol absorbed into a carbohydrate. It really depends on how much alcohol is absorbed per weight. If it's not a lot, you'd be left with mostly just a sugar rocket essentially with a little kick. I wonder if the alcohol is prone to dry out of the carbohydrate, if exposed to the atmosphere? If so, special handling would be required to keep it in there. If you get some, let us know how it works out. Thanks. WSM
nwpyro Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Wait... What? Seriously, you guys are considering using Jello shots as rocket fuel? What a waste of Jello shots...
FlaMtnBkr Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Yeah, you could eat them while baking some BP. That would be a party. ;-)
