taiwanluthiers Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I notice that remote control drones are getting more prolific by the minute... so it got me thinking, what if one were to attach a shell to a drone with a 2 second time fuse (however much needed to make sure the shell falls far enough that it doesn't damage the drone), and just drop them remotely while igniting the TF at the same time so that it bursts at the right altitude. Not very practical for sure but just wonder if there's anyone who tried it and if it works reliably at all...
FlaMtnBkr Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I'm sure the military uses them a lot. But probably don't light a time fuse. They have another fuse that lights after the shell slams into the earth. Or a terrorists car. 2
Arthur Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 If you are thinking of a rotorcoptor then the available payload mass is so tiny that there is little point -a liftable shell would be very small. If you are thinking of something with wings then the payload could be greater but getting it to the right position will be less easy. However it's likely to be a pretty significant offence in your country to drop b0mbs from aeroplanes so start by checking the inside of a holding cell before you drop even firework shells.

amateurpyro1 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I Think this is illeagal in NZ and some states. I read in this RC plane manual that you can't drop any sort of item off a flying device.
Respirator Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Before I could get reliable lift powder, I tried (just out of interest) to drop shells from balloons filled with hydrogen gas. It did work, but the timing on the fuse was annoying (low breaks). I built some hardware to drop shells from drones a while ago but never tried it as of yet.
AldoSPyro Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 i think dropping shells from drones might be a pain to do and not really preform well
Respirator Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I agree, and only allows very small shells but is nevertheless a break from the conventional mortar/rocket methods.BTW, I always use mortars now, but some may just not have the lift BP for it.
Mumbles Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 If someone can't manage to make lift quality BP, do you really think it's wise to attempt to make full shells in the first place? 1
Respirator Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Good point, just putting alternate ideas out there, but yeah, you're right - lift BP is more or less the fundamental part of any firework that goes over 6ft.
