maddyn99 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I was at lowes today getting some PVC fittings to make a new tumbler for my ball mill and noticed they had HDPE in 3" and 4" pipe. Each section was $8.99 for a 10' piece. I have never seen or used a HDPE pipe so I was curious if these are the same as being sold for fireworks usage. The outside was white and seemed to be a coating over a black interior and surprisingly flexible for plumbing pipe. If so this would be WAY cheaper than ordering and having it shipped to me.
Nessalco Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 The proper pipe will be labeled DR-17 for three inch and DR-21 for four inch. Label may also read SDR-#. It is a thick walled, rigid HDPE pipe - very little flex, and it usually comes in 20 foot sticks. Kevin
nater Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Look for exactly what Kevin wrote. HDPE is a common plastic and not all grades of it will work for a mortar. It does come in different colors, I have seen white before, but it was solid white with blue lettering.
Dean411 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 If its the stuff that is ribbed has rings around it. It is NOT the correct pipeusually menards has it upto 2" but never seen it at lowes.

LambentPyro Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 You should also make sure that it isn't ABS. I was at the HD ready to buy a piece of 4" pipe that was black, but noticed ABS was stamped on it; then I saw it was very warped which told me it's somewhat flexible.
Shadowcat1969 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 As Dean said, if it is the white ribbed stuff that is the HDPE used for drainage piping and won't be good for mortar tubes.
maddyn99 Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 This isnt the same stuff. It looks to be a low/no pressure drainage type of pipe I think. http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/maddyn99/Projects/FireWorks/2014-04-03145938.jpg http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/maddyn99/Projects/FireWorks/2014-04-03150100.jpg
nater Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Good idea to pass, I think that looks far too thin to make a suitable mortar.
schroedinger Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Sry, for bringing this back up, but i got an other question. If buying the ahove metioned wall thicknesses which mateprial is the right one a HDPE 80 or 100?
