marks265 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 All of my cylinder shells use black powder with no carrier used. I have seen things that show that the Maltese use cork for a carrier. I just can't go there just yet because that would be a lot of cork to buy. As mentioned to some degree, it is more money spent on more special material. I also wonder about some of the cork material because some is natural cork and some is synthetic (or fake) which makes me wonder about how well the BP pastes to the fake cork. It just seems like another headache at this point. Next year I might rethink it but for now, even when building mid-sized shells, 100 percent BP is still fine with me. The prices Nater mentioned is about where I'm at too. Mumbles mentioned prices that are more main stream to the buying of a few pounds for the occasional pyro so I can see where he is going with what he has written. Once again it is about opportunity. 10 bucks a pound and I would be building smaller shells too.
pyrodoc Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I just saw a youtube video where person adds whistle mix to bp coated rice hulls in a 4 inch shell. If the whistle mix is so sensitive to shock and friction, is that a wrong practice the person is doing? I mean while handling a shell it can fall etc
nater Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 You never want to handle live pyro too rough, but consider the shock of the lift. If the shell survives the shock of being lifted 600 -1000 feet up in just a few seconds, it will be fine for typical handling. I have heard of shells with chlorate stars igniting if they make a round trip and hit the ground from their intended display height.
Niladmirari Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Usually hulls are coated between 4:1 and 7:1 meal to hulls, so your ratio is in the ball park. Coated hulls are used to keep the proper amount of BP without getting too heavy. Imagine how heavy a 12" shell would be if it were filled with granulated BP. Coated hulls also help the flame propagate through the burstSometimes russian shells bursting granulated BP. 12 inch shell weighs 16 kg. But need a steel (iron) mortar.
Niladmirari Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Can use the rice hulls for 12 inch shell (double pistil)? Edited March 5, 2014 by Niladmirari
Mumbles Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Yes you can. It's a waste to use granulated BP. No one's ever complained about russian pyros being overly practical though.
Niladmirari Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Thank you. Tell me please. For bursting ВР and KClO4+C (№5) need different strengthening? For which of them should strengthen stronger?
