Jakenbake Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I've been experimenting with the crushed walnut shells you get as a bird litter from pet stores. Coating it in BP as you would meal coated rice hulls. Results so far are impressive. 20 grams of comp lifted a 200 gram orange out of sight! Has anyone tried something similar?
MWJ Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 How do you coat these? Wet them down then dust them with the BP?
Jakenbake Posted February 8, 2014 Author Posted February 8, 2014 I stole some panty hose from the wifey, put some of the walnut shell in the legs and tied a knot above them. Soaked them in a bucket of warm water with dextrin for 5 mins. Spun the water out of the shells and added BP until they where all fully coated. Let dry for 2 days. Pretty simple process. It makes nice tiny size grains about the size of #8 shotgun shot.
pyroman2498 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 MWJ, my gusses is you would squit them with water and shake with meal powder ,or thow them into a star roller and coat them the same way you would coat your rice hulls
Jakenbake Posted February 8, 2014 Author Posted February 8, 2014 I thought about putting them in my star roller. But i just threw them in a bucket and swished it around a few times. It didn't take long at all.

Could have been the commercial charcoal used or possibly something in the cob media but it was labeled as "additive free". Left a lot of smoking cob residue too.
Shadowcat1969 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I would also think that the weight per volume would be quite a bit higher than with Rice Hulls, although that is just a guess, not backed up by any factual data.
Jakenbake Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 I'm sure rice hulls might work a little better. But i have the walnut on hand from my vibratory case cleaner.
mikeee Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Ground Cork is another nice media used for this purpose and the weight and volume it consumes is a great advantage. The cork is somewhat porus and works well to hold the BP powder when coated.Save your wine bottle corks and run it thru a garbage disposal to grind it up.You usually soak the cork in water prior to coating with the BP.Youtube has video (Saturday Night Live Cork Soaker)
