Nikko Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I hear it all the time. People continually accuse Star Trek of being anti-Semetic, despite the whole gist of the show is getting along with everybody, no matter who they are. Specifically, they say the Ferengi are Jewish stereotypes. Now.... who is the racist? A TV show about friendship and tolerance says: "OK, these guys only care about money"The reply is: "Oh, they're Jews?" You see what I mean? Which group applied the stereotype? Linkey I would have complained on the article itself, but my posts never work on that site. Also, I'd get more intelligent discussion here.
nater Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Yeah, Star Trek went to great lengths to break down racial and gender barriers on televison. The writer probably does not know the history of that show.
Bobosan Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 On the site that Nikko links, you'll find the Kirk/Uhura kiss. This was the original 1960/70's series. First televised black/white interracial kiss. Star Trek was much more than just some scifi program.
taiwanluthiers Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The original intent of star trek was to break down racial barriers. For the time it was very progressive because in the 1960's you will notice most feature actors are white. Star Trek was probably one of the first to have a black and an asian as the main part of the cast. They aren't perfect for sure but they do their best.
Nikko Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 I'm a Next Gen man, but my Favourite Star Trek was DS9. Whoopie Goldberg grew up watching TOS and said that when she saw a white man taking instructions from a black woman on TV, she had hope for the future of the world. Star Trek is Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future. The United Nations becomes useful. The world unites. We explore the universe in the name of friendship and compassion. To say he inserted a species as social commentary is absolutely correct, everything about Star Trek is social commentary. However, ST is the absolute pinnacle of tolerance and acceptance. I really like Star Trek. And tell you what, I was surprised when I was forced to watch an episode of Battlestar Galactica and it was seriously good too. Not a huge fan of Star Wars, though.....
