jaysgoh Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Hey guys, I accidentally found out that kno3 + sodium benzoate produce bright yellow colour. I using Kno3 : 70Sodium benzoate :27Sulfur : 3Mix together and place it in plastic wrap bag, just like normal star's making. Don't cut too thin unless it will beak easily.. It need prime with bp bcoz it's little bit hard to ignite. The concept same like yellow powder, when it heat and it melt, it will puff, but when directly heat with torch it will burn like stars.
bob Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) If you go to page two of pyrotechnics there is a topic called *KN03 based stars* you will find a similar star composition on the first page, the guys name is firetech.bob Edited January 29, 2014 by bob
schroedinger Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Also maybe god to add a binder if making stars out of that comp
bob Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) Actually I don't think a binder is necessary, I made some of these (slightly different but the same chemicals with the addition of a small amount of charcoal) and they are very hard, I also made some with dextrin just this morning so we will see what difference the binder makes. I wonder does Na(CO3)2 have binding properties?bob Edited January 30, 2014 by bob
schroedinger Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Nope Soda acts more as an retardant than as a binder
jaysgoh Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 It's slightly looks like golden powder. Will detonate or deflagration once melt
bob Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Please ignore my second post on this topic as I got some stuff wrong and I am unable to edite it now. This is what I should have wrote.I made some similar stars a few days ago (Sodium bicarbonate instead of Sodium benzoate and different ratios) and they came out quite hard, and since Schroedinger said that soda is not a binder I am unsure of what made them so hard, since the only other chemical were charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate.I currently have a batch drying that has dextrin in it as well as a different batch with higher KN03 content and no charcoal, so we will see how they turn out.bob
