baso112 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Hi what is the best composition to use as liftcharge with bbq charcoal. If i mill the standard 75 15 10 comp its still too slow..
schroedinger Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 You need a better charcoal, bbq charcoal isn't suited for lift. But your milled bbq charcoal BP should be suited for benzolift. That would be ok for shells up to 3"
jaysgoh Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 There's a specific lift charge formulae Potassium nitrate 74%Charcoal 14%Sulfur 12% From ebook
abby Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 ok. i am very new to this stuff.....i am from trinidad in the caribbean and its only in recent years that fire works has become legal here and its very limited. so i out of curiousity decided that i wanted to learn more. so i get the basic idea....i bought my basic stuff to make my BP, i just got my scale from amazon.com and i am almost finished making my ball mill,.......i have also looked into many terms and chemicals...but can someone explain to me more about benzo lift? is it better than BP and are there any other substances that can be used for the lift charge?
pyrokid Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Benzolift can work, but there is a reason it isn't recommended for large shells. It is a more violent composition than black powder, so it "slams" the shells out of the gun more than black powder does. You can get by using it for small shells, but it will flowerpot large shells. General advice is to just make BP. It's cheaper anyway.
Maserface Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Are you granulating or corning your BP? How big of shells are you trying to lift? Do you have access to pyro chemicals where you live?
Arthur Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Find a decent pyro charcoal in your country/state/town. BBQ charcoal doesn't make good BP. Lots of threads on here will list good charcoal form all over the world, you should be able to find something suitable locally. If not charcoal then find the wood and use the BBQ coals to cook good charcoal.
Shadowcat1969 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 BBQ Briquette charcoal is very poor for making BP. Too many fillers, like clay. Lump charcoal, like "Cowboy" brand (here in the U.S.) I have heard can make passable BP, if one picks out the lumps that are completely cooked to use. I haven't used it myself.
schroedinger Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Abby benzolift is a lift powder which consists of about 50:50 Bp to Whistle. It is a very aggressive lift powder, which gets used to lift thing up to a max of 3". Everything bigger than that needs to be lifted just by bp. It can also bee used for aerial reports.
baso112 Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 I think its possible.. these are the results of what i have made yesterday.
baso112 Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 Waiting for my granulated meal to dry.
Maserface Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Now do some lift tests, launch some baseballs, record the lift weight and total flight time. That will ultimately determine how "good" it is.
