St. Elsewhere Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 ok so i like to make my own gun powder and there is nothing wrong with that. but i want to get the most out of my experience, so i want to add a more powerful oxidizer to it. i got one in mind. basically im asking if i could replace the potassium nitrate with ammonium perchlorate. would this work or would my best bet to go with potassium perchlorate? if anyone has anymore info or ideas please help me EDIT:im going to use it for a cherry bomb thing. i want to get rid of some small trees and hav fun doing it
50caliber Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 What do you want to use the powder for? Lifting shells, Rocket ect
rocket Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 So you want to do is make BP more powerful? That’s what I get from your post. Making a BP like comp with KClO4 is KP, which isn’t the much better than BP IIRC. As 50calibar said what is this comp going to be used for. I wouldn’t suggest ball milling the comp with KClO4/ ammonium perchlorate ether.
Chemguy Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 hahaha, you want to make a bp with perchlorate? BP has sulfur so don't, unless you take the sulfur out.
Mumbles Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Well, I wouldn't ball mill it with perc and sulfur. As far as just mixing them in a comp, I don't see a problem. Yes, it is more sensitive to impact than say BP. KP is a very common mix however. There really isn't a way to "boost" BP. Well using balsa charcoal results in some very strong fast burning meal. I think thats about as close to boosting as you'll get. It won't be able to get rid of any trees. I suggest you find more appropriate uses for pyro. Using it in the applications you are implying is what is causing the current problems for us. Instead of pyro, I suggest a saw.

You're kidding right? They're illegal and dangerous and hardly relate to true pyrotechnics. You're not going to get much help on this forum with cherry bombs or M-80's.
Chemguy Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 If you want to get rid of some trees, use a spade and saw . cherry bombs won't works, adding ammonium perchlorate isn't going to make some super bp that will uproot trees or cause usefull damage.
mormanman Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I think I have an answer but a question at the sametime. Ok the answer first.I hear rice grains (correct me please b/c I know its something like that) coated with bp. Now the question. How does one get the bp on the rice grains. (I think the rice grains are like rice cripies).
