What would you like to know about them? You asked kind of a broad, general question. Their manufacture is described on passfire and in the Fulcanelli articles.

There are a few different ways to do the effect, with lots of room for artistic interpretation. Generally, it's at least a two break shell. The first break contains insert shells (pupadelles), and breaks dark. This is the "planet" break. I find you need minimally 6-7 inserts for the effect to not look sparse. In bigger shells, multiple rings are suitable, but this doesn't really come up until you get to the 6-8" region minimally.

The second break is the "sun" break. It's just a typical single break of stars or comets, but there is a lot of room for effect experimentation. The overall effect is a large break in the center, with several smaller planets surrounding the sun break. This can be spoiled by orientation in the sky.

For the majority of people, the real effect is generally that the "planet" inserts are timed to go off simultaneously with the sun break. Some will do multiple breaks of planets. Some make these as single breaks with the sun breaking initially, and the planets going off later. While a nice effect in it's own right, I don't feel that it's quite as good as getting everything to go off at the same time. It gives an additional level of challenge, and is more attractive to me.

The major piece of advice I can give is to use the same timing element or the planets and the sun. IE use time fuse for everything, or spolettes for everything. Trying to mix and match the burn times is futile. It took me 2 years to learn this seemingly very obvious lesson.

Seeing that shell construction makes me want to throw up.

This shell sort of unintentionally turned into a fairly nice sun and planet shell, if you ignore the bottom shot. It should give you an idea what it's supposed to look like in general.
