dangerousamateur Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 A certein european dealer sells chunks of "Mischmetal", what is said to be a mixture of cerium, lanthanum, neodymium and other stuff. Just curious: whats the use of it in Pyro?
nt8 Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I too see this thing in Pgarage, maybe this can powdered and make sparks in star comp. example TT.... But this is only my idea! the skylighter wrote this: "Misch metal is an alloy of cerium and several rare-earth metals. It is used to make sparks in movie special effects and for other applications. Scrape it with a knife, or a hacksaw blade or scissors and watch the sparks fly."
Shizznt Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 I read that its most common use is ferrocerium "flint" ignition is some lighters. The alloy is too soft to give good sparks so they have to blend it with iron oxide and magnesium oxide to form a harder metal known as ferrocerium.
