Milling Jar Volume

Hi all, a question on jar and media volume. I know in a perfect milling world the media should take up 5o% of the jar. Now, is that 50% of the total volume including the reducing coupler neck up to the very opening of the jar? Or is it 50% of the straight piece of pipe that makes up the body of the jar excluding the area of the reducer coupler? I couldn't find the answer in Sponenburgh's book. Many thanks. Kurt

Everytime i have milled i have just gone off of the start of the reducer,. Although unless your lip is ridiculously big this is not going to make a difference in my eyes

It's very rare anyone actually follows that rule close enough to actually bother measuring volumes. Just fill the jar up roughly half way. I just took 25lbs of lead media for my 1 gallon jar and called it close enough. I generally calculate volume from the straight area of my jars.

There are ways to actually calculate the volume of jars with couplers and all that stuff, but the most accurate way is probably just to weigh the jar, fill it with water, and weigh it again.

Thanks fellas. Mumbles, i was going to fill the jar to the top with water. Pour it into measuring cups and then pour half of it back into the jar. Look inside and put a grease pencil mark inside at the water level. Empty it out blow it dry with the compressor and fill it with media to the mark and call it a day. I didn't know how critical/noncritical it was. I have a tendency to over think this kinda stuff! Your way of using a scale sounds easier. Thanks again. Kurt Edited by uncrichie

The water and scales method works well for irregular shaped milljars. If you get 2 kg of water in there, 50% will be 1 Litre of volume, fill a measuring jug upto the 1L mark with media and you`re done ;)
