Reading all the good stuff on here keeps reminding me I have no workshop atm and can't build anything :( Need to get on my renos asap!

I make paper related items in the winter, order tubes, paper, gather metal, cast lead grinding media, fix tools, design and record new ideas. No real pyro going on in the shop when it gets down to 0° F. That's why I am bothering you all so much lately. ;)

Other than sourcing new ideas and gathering materials, I can't do anything else. I don't even have a workbench right now and all my tools are packed up. It really sucks.

It really sucks to have to dumb down every aspect of the things I enjoy when talking to others. Pyro is social disorder - Or rather, people in general are infected with a severe lack of comprehension and intelligence. Edited by NightHawkInLight

Ha, so true, really is an effort to talk to someone about pyro who doesn't know much. Even a mate who is somewhat interested in fireworks (buys them mainly).. its still an effort to talk about the making of fireworks and stuff.

I have no idea what you weirdos are doing, but I'm trying to catch up.

Alright, people around me may say how good, attentive, nice, loyal, smart, honest, confident, generous I am, but few of them realise that I have some negative sides, and maybe the greatest of them is:

I SUCK AT STUDIYING !

And I can't take this anymore. My education is shit almost my whole life and never was a priority for me. Now, I really wish it was a little.

This semester I didn't pass almost all of my exams and I realised I have to sit and study more seriously about it. It's impossible to do it at home, because I always get distracted. For example I'm doing pyro, or another hobby. Or listening to music, reading pyro stuff, forums, chemistry and everything I like, but not related with education. Or I'm gonna wash dishes, repair the broken table, wipe the floor, but never sit and read.

So I decided from now to GO TO the library every day for a few hours, learning there and hoping there will be no distraction.

It's a very hard step to take for me, but I have no choice, I don't want to spend money for nothing. Also, my family is confident that I will have an university diploma one day, and I don't want to dishonour them. And partially it's not only my own money. True, university tax is not as expensive like in the US, it costs me 160E per semester, but it's not little either, life's hard enough here.

It's true I was deeply in  this semester, as well as focusing on pyro, but these are no excuses.

Wish me luck. It's a step I've never seriously done in my life and now I have to :D Hopefully I'll seriously sit on my but and prepare for the amendment session

Hey 50AE,

I feel what you're going through. I have distractions at home and at work. I have distractions with my love of art and motorcycles and every damn pastime I've ever pursued. So I've decided to make some changes. I need to focus on two or three things and let all the other stuff go. So, tonight the house is being reorganized. All the old stuff is being packed away in boxes. Put away and out of mind. My workspace will be dedicated to what is truly on the front burner. Craigslist here I come. There's a lot of junk that needs to go.

Good luck to you 50AE. Maybe this idea can help a little.

Cheers.

It's depressing when you're in Chemistry 2, in your senior year, and the idiots can't even read the periodic table, remember the basic properties of helium, or tell the difference between exo/endothermic reactions......2mellow.gif

I have no hope for the future.

I got the video sdent to me with some footage of a small show I did a few weeks ago. I didn't have a cameraman available, but one person filmed a bit on a smartphone.

Anyway, my finale shot had 3-5" crossette shells:2-Truely Red w/crackle, and 1 Truely Red/Fish Gold glitter (ran out of crossettes). Anyway all I got was to listen to the pops as the camerman neglected to point the camera up. So I don't know if they actually broke nicely or not... :(

I agree completely, the junior college I go to caters to the lowest common denominator. It really is ridiculous, these people are literally hand fed almost the EXACT questions that are going to be on the tests, and they still whine about the questions being hard. Are you serious?

Think about it this way, about 35% (and thats on the low side) of each test grade in that class was D's and F's. I got more than a 100% grade for the entire semester, and I didn't read the damn book. Just went to class, listened, and remembered. Nor do I take notes.... I could have completely skipped the final test and still had a 100% grade.

Yeah, but look at it this way - as long as the college keeps its pass rates high enough to keep the money flowing, nobody cares. The US doesn't need scientists, technologists and engineers any more. Even if these guys got an education and graduated able to read and write, there are no manufacturing companies left to employ them. Why over-educate them and give them aspirations they can't achieve? Plus the morons have the upper hand politically these days and it doesn't pay to look too smart if you want to fit in.

I've been planning a backpacking/canoe trip for this weekend and everyone bailed on me. What the hell am I going to do with all this freeze dried food?

I can send you an empty water heater box to crawl inside and you can pretend you're on one of the first Apollo missions.

Seriously, sorry to hear that. What river were you going to float? Pere Marquette? Au Sable?

NHL, I feel your pain! A buddy of mine came up with this great idea to charter a boat out of Destin for a fishing trip. Of course after I put the deposit down one by one errbody bailed! i hate having looser friends! No, they really are a great bunch of guys just a little to ADD.

[rant] There are fireworks clubs that are governed by people that would rather show contempt, hate and spew vitriol rather then teach and mold fireworkers into treasured members. Its too bad to, there are a lot of incredible people whom populate these clubs that are overseen by heartless ogres. It is my hope that everyone here would understand the importance of teaching and training over punitive and unreasonable punishment. [/rant]

Edit: I just accidentally replied to a really old post and can't figure out how to delete it. Now THAT'S depressing, haha!

Edit 2: Never mind, it wasn't that old. Just the last page.

There's always new employment opportunities in such fields if you know where to look. My sister is a computer engineer working on automated storage and retrieval systems, I'm an optical engineer working at a micro-machining startup company. Both are new technologies that require scientists and engineers.

The job market may be much smaller but it's still there - and if you want to be competitive in it I don't think there's such thing as being overqualified. Now if you're talking specifically about people that can't practically reach the level of qualification needed to be in some way competitive and have a quality career in science or engineering than perhaps you are right.

Now that I re-read your post, I realize you are probably talking about the masses, not just those interested in a career in these fields... which makes a lot more sense.

I perceive we need a "sarcasm" smiley.

Are you telling me I typed a serious response to a sarcastic post? Haha. I've decided from now until the end of time, instead of ever discussing education or politics, I will spend that time building shells.

LOL Flying Fish. Half the people in my company are Ph.Ds and a frequent topic of conversation around the water cooler is the degraded state of US education, the destruction of US industry, and the talk radio attitude that anyone smarter than a 5th grader must be some kind of liberal elitist who hates America.
Posted

We used to have water cooler conversations, but the company that we shared a building with moved out recently and took their water cooler with them. I think I'm going to suggest that we re-group by the de-ionized water system.

We rarely talked about education though, more about hobbies and really only went into politics when it affected us, like when one of the company's owners ran for governator of MI (and won)! I think I fit in well with these people, we're in our own little world.

Incidentally exactly half of our company are also PhDs, though our total number of employees is only 8 :P
