Swede Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 WOW! You guys are right. That hideous old Passfire forum was some USENET antique leftover, an unusable piece of crap. The new one looks great! Now I can actually get involved in some of the good deals they have on occasion for bulk chems.
TheSidewinder Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 In case you miss the thread over there, Swede, go into your user control panel and make your email visible to other members. (Apparently, Kyle set visible email to default to OFF for all users during the upgrade.) If you don't, no one can let you know about the bulk deals.
Swede Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Thanks TS. I also need to make some of these shoots, but it's so hard to find the time. I wonder what the cops think when they pull over some guy enroute to a shoot who has 3 or 4 fiber drums of Chinese potassium perchlorate or maybe red gum? They probably think (initially) "Wow, I have just busted a huge drug dealer!" and then when they find out it's perchlorate, not cocaine, big disappointment.
Mumbles Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Hmmmm, or maybe I should just start storing my monthly Columbian Express delivery in my perc drums.
Pretty green flame Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 Lost my 214€ sunglasses, crap. This is not good
Yankie Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Lost my 214€ sunglasses, crap. This is not good Have you checked in your shoe? Is it really worth paying that much for a pair of sunglasses? I have been pretty happy with my $40 ones, though I have nothing to compare to.

I have been pretty happy with my $40 ones, though I have nothing to compare to. They were Ray Ban RB 3332 model, a present from my parents. THEY WERE worth the money. I feel like crap for losing them.
Seymour Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Not much I can say. I feel for you. I'm with Yankie in that I'd never pay that much for them, but I understand that you appreciate quality glasses, and most importantly, it was a gift.
Mumbles Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Some of you have heard my rants/bitching about my priming issues over the last few years. Today it came to a culmination. I managed to blow spider stars blind. The same spider stars that light like a champ from flash bags and me looking at them wrong, were blown blind by a KP like mix in a 3" shell. Definitely not over broken IMO.

I managed to blow spider stars blind. The same spider stars that light like a champ from flash bags and me looking at them wrong, were blown blind by a KP like mix in a 3" shell. Definitely not over broken IMO. This could be a world first Mumbles On a serious note, could they have shattered? Looks like you've got a pretty energetic break charge formula on your hands.
Miech Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Heheh, that reminds me of my first KP test last week. I made a 3" shell with Winokur 39J glitter and three ruby red stars, and only the red ones lit. All glitters were completely shattered, eventhough I did cut down on pasting quite a lot. Six layers was just too much, so that stuff is scaringly powerfull.
Mumbles Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I used 7 layers of 35#, which is less than recommended. I don't know how what I used compares with KP, but in the past I found KP to not be powerful enough for 3". Then again, I wasn't using willow when I made that KP, like I did with this mix. It's a mix I got from Eric Hunkin's. It more or less has the sulfur replaced by potassium benzoate. The shells broke very nicely I thought based upon sound. I'll try some more at the next shoot with some stars primed beyond all conceivable need. I don't think the stars shattered. There wasn't the indicative big orange cloud. Like I said before, I've slammed insert shells of these stars open with flash bags. They're very resilient, and have a pretty good amount of binder in them. I suppose it's possible that they've slowly absorbed some water since I made them last fall, and have softened a bit. I guess it doesn't matter now as they're all gone.
TheNitrateFellow Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 A friend gave me a P4 motherboard he didn't have use for. I purchased a nice Antec case and power supply to build a computer with it. Yes, I checked the datasheets. The motherboard datasheet says : "Only use with certified ATX12V compliant power supplies." The power supply datasheet says "Fully ATX12V 2.2 compliant" Then no problem right? I started to screw the brass spacers and fasten the board in place. Then I plugged all the tiny wires to the front panel (about an hour of work) then I tried to plug the main power plug on the motherboard. It doesn't fit. What, that's not possible! Try it the other way around! After carefuly looking at the two connectors, I find out that the motherboard has a 20-pin connector, and that the power supply has a 24-pin connector. ATX12V COMPLIANT MY ROUND ASS! I just spent 180$ of case&power supply for a damn Intel motherboard that just won't work! I think I will never ever buy Intel products anymore. On the bright side, my father says he will give me a motherboard for my birthday, so I will build a real good computer (based on AMD processor of course!) instead of reusing all my stockpile of old parts.
mike_au Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 TheNitrateFellow: Have another look at the plug, it is quite common for the extra 4 pins to be connected by a clip so they can be separated, if not then an adapter is only worth a couple of dollars (generally, if an adapter is required, it would be supplied with the PSU which is why I suspect your should be the kind that separates). The larger plug is often used on systems that have high power requirements (servers, workstations, high end gaming machines, etc) since you have obviously bought a fairly high quality case, I guess they assume you will be using it with a high powered system. Both Intel and AMD based systems are available using 24 pin plugs.
Pretty green flame Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) It's a mix I got from Eric Hunkin's. It more or less has the sulfur replaced by potassium benzoate. Sounds good, and I just happen to have some Benzoate laying around. Will give a shot very soon. Edited May 11, 2009 by Pretty green flame
TheNitrateFellow Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Wow, thanks mike! After a close look, the last 4 pins appear to be kind of removable. I'm not sure I will use the motherboard I have tough, since my father will give me a new one. I might as well try it for the time being. Sorry for the insult to Intel , but I've had quite a few experiences with strangely-designed products from them, and I was just assuming it was their fault again. Anyway, thank you! Mumbles Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Here is the actual formula. Potassium Perchlorate 70 Charcoal 11 Sodium Benzoate 15 SGRS 4 I used potassium benzoate, and dextrin. I like dextrin better for making burst.
Swede Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Mumbles, any tips for preparing this particular burst? I'm assuming this comp is layered onto rice hulls or rice krispies in the usual fashion. It looks to be a good one.
Mumbles Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I made it just like I make any other burst. Coated it 6.5:1. You can adjust the benzoate/charcoal ratio for burst strength. 1) Soak the hulls in warm water for a bit. (10-15 min) 2) Let drain, and shake out excess water. I use a kitchen strainer. 3) Add to new dry container, and add some burst. Keep adding it a hand full at a time shaking and stirring. 4) One trick I normally use is to remove 1 part of burst before you screen in the binder. You add all the binded burst first, and add the unbound burst at the end. It may not seem like a lot, but it really helps to break up clumps, and make everything separate into single grains. The wet grains have enough binder to bind the last part of burst.
Swede Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Thanks Mumbles! Since this IS the depression thread, a vent... why does bad shit seem to happen all at once? This Sunday was one of the worst days I've had in a LONG while. Wake up. It's 6:10 A.M. and I forgot to bid for my next month's work schedule; the computer won't take the bids, so now my entire month of June is going to suck donkey nads. Then, my dog comes to greet me, and he's on three legs. His paw is swollen and he's hurting from some sort of injury. Damn. I go outside to get the paper, and water is POURING from beneath the concrete slab of my home and running down the street... I've got a massive slab leak! And I've got to go to work in one hour. F--K F--K F--K! My water main is now off, I'm looking at $4000+ bill, my dog is still on three legs (vet tomorrow). I hate life. Owning a home is one big money pit.
swervedriver Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 That sucks. I had the same problem, had to tunnel under the slab. Big $$$. Hope the dog's ok...
crazyboy25 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 My dog just got leg surgery after we noticed she limped on her back leg, $4,000 dollars later she has a shaved leg and a cone head. *sigh*
Swede Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 My dog just got leg surgery after we noticed she limped on her back leg, $4,000 dollars later she has a shaved leg and a cone head. *sigh* $4 Grand? Ouch. What was wrong with the dog? My other dog (Brittany) was spayed recently, and she came home with one of those horrible elizabethan collars. She was miserable, had a real hang-dog expression, pardon the pun. The vet said "Two weeks with the collar" and I'm nodding my head, thinking "This guy's on crack. There's no way I'm leaving this collar on that long." Two days was all everyone (dog included) could take, and she didn't mess with her stitches. My shitty Sunday has turned into a glorious Tuesday. My job bids WERE accepted, the so-called "slab leak" ended up being external to the slab, and my dog healed miraculously. But my old digestive system can't take days like that anymore.

Don't come posting sushine stories like that in the depression thread, you're making me even more depressed then I was before. Good to hear that it all worked out, usually the old saying is right: There is always sun after rain, but I get what you're saying days like that sucks all the energy out of one. I don't know if this fits in the depression or happiness thread yet, I've applied for a new job again (I got a temp job for now after beeing fired) and went to do a PJP test (never heard of it before) and they called me up for an intervju next week.
