PyroCube Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Hi all I don`t know if this question already appeared in this forum. Which charcoal gives the best long lasting golden tail? I intend to make some willow diadem stars and I want those to look really great. Greets
TYRONEEZEKIEL Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 (edited) In my experience, white pine is the best. I have heard of another wood being very great for sparks. Golden Locust or Honey Locust. Same thing. Edited August 5, 2013 by TYRONEEZEKIEL
Blackthumb Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Pine works for me....I have a sawmill and cut lots of pine....white pine, cedar, red fir and larch...all work well.........can send some to you all, just pay the shipping...
pyroman2498 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I think red cedar is much better for Black powder than stars, i get very nice BP with it, but my stars aren't as good as if i were to use white pine or another hard wood like that
FlaMtnBkr Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Southern yellow pine is supposed to be good for sparks and what is called for in fire flies on cocaine or FSOM stars. Oak is supposed to give a nice blond color. Generally hard woods or wood higher in sap make charcoal that is better for sparks. Something you might read up on is soaking charcoal in a nitrate solution first. That and the baggie method of cutting stars which help saturate the charcoal with the KNO3.
Anarchy08 Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 yeah, done a batch of tigertails using pinecone charcoal. ended up with a really rich deep red fire dust that just lingers for ages, nice amount of oil in there. resembles something of the spider star comp
Zumber Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 our forum mate already told about the type of charcoal that gives long lasting sparks.but long lasting sparks also depends upon mesh size of charcoal, for example 80 mesh charcoal gives long lasting spark than airfloat charcoal.
