themolehole_9876 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Hey guys, I am starting to get back into my pyro after 6 months break or so with a few little things like rockets being set off periodically. Anyway, now i remember what stopped me earlier.. this damn ball mill!! I have been working on it the past week or so and its all working perfectly now however i cannot get any grip on it! The rollers are just 1/2" threaded rods and so far ive tried... duct tape(which starts to peel off), bike tubes (which rip apart), the foam which u can put a pipe down the middle for insulation .. which melts a bit and gets ripped apart too lol. The ball mill gets a fair bit of friction where the rollers and belt come into it so the 1/2" rods generate a bit of heat..So! any ideas guys? thanks Scott
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Step one would be to get non-threaded rods. This is what is causing the tearing and destruction of the various things you're trying to put on the outside. The bike intertubes would work. At the hardware store they also sell black tubing that is acceptable. At the moment I am drawing a blank what it's used for. It's right on the tip of my tounge, and it's driving me nut. It's steel reinforced and is decently tacky on the outside.
themolehole_9876 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Posted January 7, 2007 its gotta be threaded rods cause of the way it all goes together... btw when i did use the bike tyres i wasnt using the threaded rod technique i am now
itwasntme Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Possibly friction tape or use a rubber barrel.
Frozentech Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 You don't say what size the drive rollers are, but heater hose from an auto parts store might work as a non-slip surfacing for them.
Mumbles Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Heater hose was what I was thinking of. Covering the threaded rod with the heater hose will at least help to reduce the wear from the rods.
cplmac Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 you could fill in the the threads on the threaded rod where they make contact with the mill. Probably JB Weld or something similar that will stick and last. Mumbles is right, the threaded rod is killing your friction. There is also a liquid electric tape you could try and fill it in with, might give you more grip but less life.
Little Fish Big Pond Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 You want to try some electritions heat shrink, just put it over your threaded bar and heat it up (a hair dryer will do the job) and it will shrink to the size of your rod (it goes with out saying get the size just a bit larger than your rod...!!) it can be got from places like r/s and maplins.
