dynomike1 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Has anyone tried any of Harry's titanium dihydride?
FlaMtnBkr Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I have tried it some. It really is too fine to be a good spark producer. It will make a bright white flame but doesn't hang in the air. He also describes it as 'dirt cheap' compared to regular titanium. It might be dirt cheap for him to buy it but is only about 15% cheaper than the same size regular titanium. He has only had it a few months and it has gone up roughly 50% in price. There are some more things I want to try it in but at this point I think I would put my money towards large mesh sponge Ti.
dynomike1 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Posted July 23, 2013 (edited) He sent me this e-mail today, don't know if yall can open it. I think somebody is sweeping up the floor.Okay didn't work. Anyway he was talking about granulating it. Edited July 23, 2013 by dynomike1
FlaMtnBkr Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 That is interesting. I will have to check my email. I have actually wondered about doing that with aluminum in the past. Maybe mix in a little oxidizer and make small 'pellets' that are maybe bound with parlon, NC, or phenolic. Something that would make them rock hard that could survive a salute. And then it might burn in the atmosphere after being ignited in whatever it was put in for a long hanging spark. I never got around to trying it but it sounds like it might work if he mentioned it. I guess this would be a good candidate to try it with. Assuming you could really get it for dirt cheap, like $5 bucks a pound. Then the extra work of granulating it would be worth it. But considering I have got -7+18 Ti sponge for $10-12 depending on quantity, that is what I would try to buy. It makes pretty awesome Ti salutes, and is what Ned G. uses in his long hanging Palm tree shells. His comets hang for around 15 seconds which is a really long time for a pyro effect. I guess if you granulated it you could probably control particle size somewhat which would be nice. Hopefully they would be irregular enough to take fire easily. Might have to try it. Just wish this rain would stop.
