w4cbl Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Is it possible to purchase a small star roller machine anywhere? If not, are there any plans available for making one? What size screens are really necessary? I'm thinking 4,12,20, 60, and 100. All advice appreciated.
Mumbles Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I would get a 40 mesh screen as well. I really like mine for mixing compositions. There aren't really any ready-made star rollers available anymore. There used to be a company out of Illinois that sold them as well as simple presses and ball mills. They still sell ball mills on ebay. There really isn't much to a star roller. You need a motor and a bowl of some sort. I'd advise against the ones made out of power drills that seem popular on youtube. They're an accident waiting to happen in my opinion. You can see some pictures of some here: http://www.wpag.us/star.htm A lot of people modify cement mixers for star rollers and occasionally ball mills. There is a lot of personal preference when it comes to building them, and many people will have multiple rolling drums for different applications.
w4cbl Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Thanks, Mumbles! I haven't made a single thing yet, and already I can tell I'm hooked. I love fireworks, and the thought of making my own, and components, and tools, etc. is proving to be a new addiction. I'm reading everything I can get my eyes on, all while gathering materials, chems, and components. I'll probably get a license in the near future. Thanks for having such a wonderful, informative forum!
Bobosan Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Use variable speed control. Roll rate may depend on compositions used, type of core material and star size. A roll rate that works for one person's setup may not work with your roller setup. 1
TYRONEEZEKIEL Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I would suggest to go ahead and build the 5gallon bucket/drill model show on youtube. Do not, however, use the drill. I have had great luck just turning it with one hand while the other loads the comp. Occasionally I get one of my little helpers to roll the bucket for me. I am in the process of making a 3 drum simultaneous roller to replace the bucket one, so I have no need to get a power source for it anymore.
leedrill Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 i really like that idea tyron 3 buckets mounted on one motor somehow would make for quick rolling being able to let them roll after adding comp, while moving on to the next bucket and so on
