dwheadstone Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 The story if link does not work A 40-year-old pyrotechnician was critically injured after a pre-packaged box of fireworks malfunctioned at an event on Thursday night. When a box of fireworks weren't working at a display at Mohave County Fairgrounds, Kingman Fire Department says Jeremy Lee, of Utah, went to investigate. As Lee was checking the fireworks, they detonated improperly out of the side of their tubes and struck him in the head. Firefighters say Lee was wearing the correct safety gear, but still received massive head injuries and burns. He was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center and later flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev., in critical condition.

SideGlance Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 (edited) the guy was wearing proper safety gear and still got hurt... Edited October 31, 2013 by SideGlance
flying fish Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 There really is no "proper safety gear" for getting hit with a shell on its way out of the gun. It'll kill you no matter how good of helmet you are wearing. Safety gear is more for low breaks, falling debris, etc.
nater Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 the guy was wearing proper safety gear and still got hurt... Yep. It is unfortunate that he was hurt. No PPE will protect you from every possible situation. It is a risk we are all assume. This goes way beyond the pyro world too. The best we can do is to take reasonable precautions and hope for the best. There really is no "proper safety gear" for getting hit with a shell on its way out of the gun. Low breaks, normal fallout, sparks, etc - that is what I am protecting myself from on a shoot site. Taking a direct hit from a shell will be bad no matter what PPE is used. Even the turnout gear we wear for structural firefighting can be penetrated by high speed shrapnel.
