AdmiralDonSnider Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Very nice shells, definitely. I know they always look better in reality than on tape, and yours look very good on tape.

I know they always look better in reality than on tape, and yours look very good on tape. Thanks Admrial, One note on all my shells, they were lifted withhome made BP made with paulownia charcoal. Also we had a home made BP contest at this shoot. The charcoals used were Balsa, alder, paulownia andcommercial air float. We shot a golf ball using 7 gramsof the BP. The winners in order:BalsaPaulowniaAlderCommercial air float. The balsa was far the best with the paulownia a close second.BJV
Bobosan Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 BJV, what did the breaks have? You said you were about a half mile away but could barely hear the bursts in video #1 (6"). Any info on milling times for the homemade BP contest?

Any info on milling times for the homemade BP contest? The Paulownia was milled about 8hrs.The Balsa and Alder were milled about 4hrs.The Commercial air float charcoal not sure of the milling time. The six inch shell breaks was my BP 5-1 on rice hulls. The twelve inch shell was 1-1 on cotton seed.BJV
fredhappy Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) Very nice Barry. I liked the 6"streamer a lot. I do feel that you could have used a bit more booster/containment in most of your shells, but especially in that 12"er.Overall star ignition looks good, so it seems you did a good job with priming. Nevertheless, I tip my hat to you. Thanks a lot for sharing my friend, keep up the good work... Edited April 24, 2013 by fredhappy
Bobosan Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Thanks BJV. Interesting the Paulownia milled 8 hours. Not that it would change the results of this particular BP contest, but I would think parameters like mill times ought to be standardized.
Mia Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Shame we never got to see the yellow at shell 12 was it that bad?
BJV Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Shame we never got to see the yellow at shell 12 was it that bad?The yellow was very disappointing. Only about 50 to 60% of the stars took fireand not any crackle. Any ideas Mia??BJV
burningRNX Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Nice work BJV. What was in that 12 "? blue IP?How where your cracklingcore's build?
Mia Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 The yellow was very disappointing. Only about 50 to 60% of the stars took fireand not any crackle. Any ideas Mia??BJVIssues with rolling stars with the use of UF has been a cause for concern, I cut pump my stars I also add the crackle composition to the colour mix by 20% Riced at 20#, I have found so far with rolling to up the UF to 15% this gives you a more solid core, I now have Phenol formaldehyde to run some tests on for the crackle cores as for the basic colour compositions with UF then I have not had any problems with ignition, never the less Rome was not built in a day so experimentation is the key I for one will keep going
