kpknd
What is the way you make color smoke cartridges? Loose fill, pressed with core, add NC binder? Usualy I just fill a tube with a clay plug in one end that has a hole drilled in it and plug the other end with a dowel. Or I press by hand with a dowel then plug the open end and drill through (using just fingers to turn the bit) the vent to make a core. What is the typical dimentions you use? kilnj69
I just recently started making these smoke devices. I am still experementing. But the first two I tried were SAME as ID clay plug hand pressed. I tried a 12mm / 1/2" ID hand made tube 70mm long and drilled the core just enough to be an "endburner". After the second time of trying to ignite it I hand drilled a 3mm core half way and added a hot igniter prime to get it to ignight. It lasted around 30 seconds so with the second one, I drilled the core the whole way and it lasted around 12seconds but very deep coloured thick smoke. Next two were Highly compressed with 3/4 depth and full depth drilled core (both 3mm core). And noticed that they really need to have a hollow core to work properly. So i decided to make 19mm / 3 1/4" ID 100mm long ones with 3mm full depth core and the burn around 90 seconds but after the first 30 seconds or so it is not so vibrant in colour or smoke output. I'm uploading a video as we speak so will edit this when it is ready. Hope this helps, BTW what composition are you using? kpknd
I am using a smoke kit from Fire fox. Not shure what all the componants are that thay use. I know that the green one has sulfur because it clumps up and can be seen when screening.
Mumbles
Are you sure it's sulfur, or just something yellow? Some green smokes are made by mixing yellow and blue smoke dyes.
psyco_1322
Are you sure it's sulfur, or just something yellow? Some green smokes are made by mixing yellow and blue smoke dyes. I got a couple pounds of some old blue smoke mix from Firefox, and it's got yellow chunks in it too. I've only seen it through the back, but it sure looks like sulfur. And they want you to mix chlorate into it??
kpknd
I have seen a number of formulations for smoke that contain chlorate and sulfur, that usualy goes against safety practices. I know that smoke comps can be dangerous, I know a guy that had a commercial factory not too far from here in buffalo ND, there was a bad explosion killing his worker and severley burning the owner, Ken Miller, ever heard of him? californiapyro
is Ken still around? I thought he passed some years ago...
Mumbles
I'm acquainted with Ken Miller. As far as I know he's still alive. He was alive a year ago the last I heard from him at least. Chlorates with sugars, as is common with smokes, is indeed frighteningly sensitive. It's on the order of the chlorate/sulfur.
kilnj69
Well the device I made was smoke dye/chlorate/lactose. Sorry I can't help you with commercial/pre made compositions.
Bobosan
The Skylighter kits use chlorate also. The mix is sodium bicarbonate, sucrose/lactose, magnesium carbonate and organic dye.

That is the same mixture I used for the black smoke that came with the instructions from coloredsmoke.com . Last I heard, Ken was in Minnesota somewhere.
