AirCowPeacock Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 No way meal works for lift, atleast not in anything <6".
eb11 Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) all my shells are 2 inch if you look at my previous postings Edited April 15, 2013 by eb11
Mumbles Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Meal could probably work, but I'd worry about reliability of it. It does not behave consistently like a granular material does. A lot of terms get thrown around when talking about the various forms of black powder, and are often used in confusing/incorrect ways. While someone might have said meal, I have general doubts if they really meant it the way you're interpreting it. eb11, I can assure you that a large majority of people do not use meal powder straight from the mill. Pretty much every one I know of uses granular BP in one form or another. I'd suggest switching back, as it will make it easier to learn from common experience. Something you may have interpreted incorrectly is a comparison between 4Fg and Meal D. They are approximately the same grain sizes, but neither are anywhere close to meal as it comes out of a mill.
eb11 Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 quess i got confused i just lite off that shell it blew lke i wanted i could see the stars blow out but they blew blind first time thats happened the only thing i can think is that i used meal all of the others were 4 f
eb11 Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 ok guys i have some questions i fired this shell in the video first of it has 2.4oz of stars and 2oz bp4f and in the center of the canister shell is 70/30 fp 3 grams. question 1 why is it so bright i cant see the stars till the end2 why didnt the flash make a bang and throw the stars outi did not spike the shell is that the answer any help would be appretiated this is the video
pyrokid Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 If the shell has little to no confinement, the report and spread will be weak. Spiking helps.
FlaMtnBkr Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 What kind of stars were they? They looked like a silver metal fueled star. If the shell didn't have good confinement and just split open, then all the stars burning in one 'clump' would look like a bright spot until they spread out some. What kind of aluminum did you use in your FP? Even if a more powerful variety, if the shell just split and dumped the contents, the FP wouldn't necessarily propel the stars out. Good construction and confinement will help with the star pattern/spread.
eb11 Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 i spiked the shell i lit tonight and i got more of a bang but not the desire effect i want i want the stars to fly out i have 2.4 oz of stars and 2.4 oz 4f bp and 3 grams 70/30 flash. thinking i need to strenghthen the shell i have 3 turns 70lbs kraft then i spike it then wrap 3 turns of 30lbs of kraft
dan999ification Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Your flash looks like bright flake, it needs good confinement to work or you get the dump or jetting problem. It looks like the shell does not build pressure. You should be getting some kind of break with just bp which only leaves a construction problem, a turn or two more on both layers of paper may be needed for bright flash to confine well, I use 12 turns total with 100gsm Kraft for 40mm shells. How are you arranging the stars, What stars, what flash? Dan.
dan999ification Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 More confinement for bright flake, more paper, more spiking.Gd al flash should do what you need without the extra paper and no spiking. Eb, I would not want to make over a kilo of flash for these shells, bp can be made to work with good construction.I still have a portion of al from a 50g bag I bought 4 years ago. Dan.
