Pretty green flame Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Well, i've been reading on the net about nozzleless rockets which are apparently impossible to CATO and have awesome thrust. I'm just looking on some insight on these things, tooling dimension (i hear they are similar to core burners), personal experience. Thanks
oriansbelt Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Hmmm a nozzleless rocket.... I've never heard of anthing like that working on a larger rocket but if it does then I don't think it would be able to create more thrust than a rocket with a nozzle. After all the point of the nozzle is to increase the amount of thrust. But they would be almost impossible to CATO.
cplmac Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Core burn whistle rockets are nozzle less. The nozzle is the fuel. I made a nozzle less BP rocket on accident. It flew well for about four seconds.
Pretty green flame Posted December 10, 2006 Author Posted December 10, 2006 @Oriansbelt, yes i was also a bit sceptic about the thrust produced, but this soon changed my mind. http://www.wichitabuggywhip.com/fireworks/...ess5eighths.wmv I found this while browsing lady kate's site yesterday, the total weight of the rocket was a little under 140g which is not at all bad for a nozzleless. Anyway, i'm going to make some rockets and fire em provided it stops raining ofcourse.
oriansbelt Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 That is pretty good for no nozzle! I think I'll try making some too and funnily enough it is raining here too. What kind of fuel comp do you think that one used?

What kind of fuel comp do you think that one used? I think he used fast willow meal directly out of the ball mill + 3% mineral oil.It has to be fast in order to work.
Pretty green flame Posted December 10, 2006 Author Posted December 10, 2006 Let the movie speak for itself. http://www.zippyvideos.com/699204644639358...zleless_rocket/ http://www.apcforum.net/files/Djnozzlelessrocket.wmv or here for the better quality.
optimus Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Interesting - I've made many nozzleless rockets and never had a problem with CATOs. Mine were all 1/2" ID with a small core. They make the most wonderful sound!, and there's something strangely satisfying about launching a rocket with no nozzle. I prefer rockets with a slightly lazy takeoff - it's hard to track my normal coreburners, they take off too damn fast.

Well the problem might be that i used standard core burner tolling (probably a too large core). What size tooling would you sugget (spindle lenght and diameter)
WonderBoy Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I have made nozzleless rockets before using ballmilled willow BP on standerd cored bp rocket tooling. i have done both 1/2" and 3/4". I have only had 1 CATO and I figured out it was because i was ramming in too large of increments. maybe thats what happened to to your rocket?
