Nessalco Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Safe use of a glue gun requires disconnecting power while you're in proximity to energetic compounds. Some folks use a power strip in a plastic bag, but that seems pretty clumsy to me. I came across an excellent deal for a foot-operated switch that will serve the purpose very well. Cast aluminum case, fully gasketed against dust, and a price that can't be beat. Add a cord and you are all set to go. http://www.ebay.com/itm/400421860259?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Kevin
taiwanluthiers Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 This is simply a switch for rotary tools and stuff, it's great for other tools like a drill press too...
Algenco Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 help out an old manis this a continuous on or momentary switch?
Nessalco Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 help out an old manis this a continuous on or momentary switch? It is a momentary switch. It can be wired normally closed (goes off when you press the pedal) or normally open (goes on when you press the pedal). Like TaiFu said, it is a very versatile switch that's beefy enough for good-sized tools. It is kind of overkill for a glue gun, but for $18.50, shipping included? Kevin

Nessalco Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 A glue gun takes a while to heat up too, so you might get sore from pressing your foot against it for so long... Other way around. You wire the switch so it is ON until you press the pedal. That way, you step on the pedal to cut power, remove the glue gun from its 'garage', do the work, replace the gun, then release the pedal to restore power. Kevin
Mumbles Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I like these personally. You just keep the dock away from your work area and take it off when you want to use it. No forgetting to turn the switch off, or push the foot pedal. http://www.staples.com/FPC-High-Temp-Cordless-Glue-Gun-White/product_941729
Nessalco Posted March 3, 2013 Author Posted March 3, 2013 Do they make a low-temp version? I've taken to using the low-temp varieties only. Kevin
Bobosan Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Picked up a "cordless" one on Ebay that heats quickly and stays hot a long time after removing from power cradle; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Loctite-Cordless-HOT-MELT-Glue-Gun-Model-81869-/120947120838?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c29029ac6 Here is another "cordless" model with a high and low temp setting; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Multi-Temp-Cordless-Glue-Gun-White-026438540390-/150996891921?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23281db911
DanielC Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 This idea was borrowed from someone else, but I just wired a switch with a big red power indicator light to a dedicated receptacle above the workbench. I use it for my small star roller as well. It is very simple and functional. Everything came from Lowes, cost about ten bucks, and took maybe ten minutes to wire up.
