BlastFromThePast Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) Hi everyone,So I've recently taken interest again in pyro-related projects and I have some chemicals left over from when I originally purchased them 2 years ago. This is what I have: 1. Potassium chlorate2. Pot. Perchlorate3. 5 micron Aluminum powder I also have some charcoal I cooked up yesterday, pine and balsa. Other than that I really don't have much else. I know, I don't have much to work with here, but I'm determined to do SOMETHING... The one thought I had is this; to make a single shot "mine". I apologize if this isn't the correct term for a single-shot ground device. The "star" that it would shoot would be made of either KClO3 or KClO4 mixed with sugar. I was messing around the other day with chlorate-based r-candy and noticed that it burned relatively slow with a bright whiteish-pink flame. Would it be possible to make a star of these chemicals? And lastly what could I do for a lift charge. One other thing, I know that you can soak paper towels in KNO3 solution and you have a makeshift fuse. Can the same be done with either of the 2 oxidizers I have? Thanks Edited February 24, 2013 by BlastFromThePast
mikeee Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Put some sulfur and potassium nitrate on your shopping list.Making black powder will increase the items you can build.Rockets, Stars, Comets, burst charges, lift charges, etc.Be careful with the perchlorate & aluminum, does not take very much to have a bad day.All it takes is a small static spark to set off aluminum & perc mix.Read up on the binary process, that is the safest way to mess with aluminum & perc.
BlastFromThePast Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 I hear ya on that. Hopefully I'll be getting some money soon so I can buy some KNO3 and sulfur. I guess what I was really asking was the safety factor involved with the things I listed above, i.e. using what I have in the mean time. Considering I don't have ANY sulfur compounds, would attempting to make "stars" out of the KClO3/KClO4 + sugar be something feasable? Also, I know about H3 and how sensistive it is relative to BP, but is it possible to make what I would call H4 hahah...which would be a lift powder made of KPerch. and charcoal?
taiwanluthiers Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 that's called KP, and I think it has sulfur in it.
dangerousamateur Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Got to many trouble making boomz huh would attempting to make "stars" out of the KClO3/KClO4 + sugar be something feasable? No. Just a wast of material Also, I know about H3 and how sensistive it is relative to BP, but is it possible to make what I would call H4 hahah...which would be a lift powder made of KPerch. and charcoal? H3 isnt that bad. Its dangerous because usually theres sulphur around. If you only have chlorate stars, H3 is fine for shooting/breaking stuff. Just treat it with respect.I think KP is even more sensitive. I suppose you get some basic stuff first. KNO3, charcoal, sulphur, redgum, some carbonates ect.
