pyrogeorge Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I have a kilo of Mg shaving and i want to make stars/comets.I made some bp comets with the shavings but didn't ignite.Which composition can i use to ignite them?
Pretty green flame Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Are your comets not igniting or is the magnesium not burning? I'll assume it's the magnesium problem as a BP comet formula should ignite fairly easily.Magnesium shavings can be fairly brittle (depends on the alloy though, where did you get them?), for a start i'd give them a quick milling just to break them apart a little. Otherwivse pass them through a 10 mesh screen to get rid of the biggest fractions. Other than that, try a formulation that burns hotter, maybe add a couple percent of fine aluminium to bring up the temperature.
pyrogeorge Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 I mean that the Mg didn't light not the comets.I will try with c8 composition.
pyrogeorge Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 (edited) This is the Mg size. I made a 2" C8 comet to test if it ignite with this composition. Edited February 2, 2013 by pyrogeorge
pyrogeorge Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 I will fire it in few days to dry well.
a_bab Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Those Mg turning look huge. Hovever you can zip them quickly in a blender with a bit of oil. They will be turned to needle-like pieces, with sharp edges, way easier to ignite. Even hammering the turnings in a bag will help with some screening.
MrB Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Seeing as the bag is on a concrete backing, i'd stab a guess and say "huge" as well. Trying to make em in to finer stuff will most likely solve the ignition issues.B!
