Schizophrenia Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Hello, I was hoping to get suggestions for my project~ I have built a remote control flamethrower for my truck... Currently, lycopodium powder is my fuel for the big flame~ The powder is shot through a smaller (2 ft.) starter flame~ http://www.radicalbed.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/2006performance.jpg Please see my website for more pics of my creation: www.radicalbed.com The effect works great and produces a column approx. 15 ft. tall... However, lycopodium is very expensive... I desperately need a comparable substitute for the powder~ So far, I have tried several different powders and liquids~ The closest powder I have found is charcoal powder and the closest liquid is propane~ My main objective is to create an effect that is shot and immediately spent when the fuel is shut off~ There can be no fallout (fuel still burning after supply is off)~ Obviously, saftey is a major concern... Can anyone provide better suggestions or a cheap source for the lyco powder? Thanks, Jamie
styropyro Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 You could give creamora a try. Take a look at this thread. The ones in that thread were black powder launched, but I'm sure you could a decent stream of fire shooting creamora into a starter flame. Another fuel you could probably use would be powdered napthalene.
cplmac Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I would highly recommend against both of those. Sorry styro. The creamora powder if it does not fully burn comes down as caramel, I have caked an entire driveway of cars in this manner. Plus, even when you get a creamora right, you still have a heavy dusting of white powder that doesn't burn. The napthalene wreaks, just flat smells terrible, even after it burns. I would think propane would be the best.
Schizophrenia Posted November 21, 2006 Author Posted November 21, 2006 Boy, I can see that happening a mile away! Only because I have done several experiments myself... Propane just might be the ticket...it's just so dangerous... Will need a inline flash arrester, a special valve that won't freeze and a flame detector in the circuit (to make the starter is there before liquid propane spews everywhere~ Thanks, Jamie
