val77 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I watched videos of 24mm whistle rockets and they climbed a 500 to 600 meters easily! I've never seen black powder rocket up to this altitude which would mean that the whistle rockets are more powerful to bp rocket ?
Mumbles Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Of course whistle rockets are more powerful than BP. I really don't know why or how you'd think otherwise. A 3lb whistle rocket that you're describing can very easily make it to 1000 meters if not more. 500-600 meters is a poorly build 3lb rocket, or has a heavy header on it. I've seen many BP rockets easily hit this level as well. 1000m really isn't an accomplishment. Hitting 2000m is more challenging, but I see it done on a regular basis.
nater Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I have had 1 lb BP rockets with only a salute header hit about half a mile (800m), and those weren't even the best rockets out there. I've seen one pound hybrid (whistle / BP ) rockets go well over a mile (1600m) To answer your question, yes whistle rockets are much, much more powerful than BP.
Peret Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Here's a measurement of (I think) a 1 inch whistle rocket taken on the Acme test stand at PGI last summer. The traces show it could easily push a header weighing 2 pounds to a height over 2000 feet. A black powder motor the same size would have less than 20% of this impulse.
val77 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 well, a 24mm whistle rocket up a 200 mm shell easily ?!
Mumbles Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Easily? no. There are some special compositions and tooling that are potentially capable of it, but a standard whistle rocket will just sit there or at least not rise to a safe height more than likely.
