LTUPyro Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Hi,Im about to buy some chemicals. Im gonna buy Parlon for stars as Chlorine donor, but I saw some star composisions that includes Parlon and red gum. And I have question, is 2 donors is requared for stars? Or I just can use Parlon without red gum?Sorry for bad english :/
psyco_1322 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Red gum is not a chlorine donor, this seems to be a common misconception. Red gum is a auxiliary fuel and also can serve as binder in some case. You see it in colored stars as fuel, it gives the oxidizers something clean burning to consume. It's also common in silver streamers, as they usually have a rather fast burn rate, the red gum helps slow and stabilize the burn. Silver stars that burn too fast have a tendency to swarm at the end of their burn, when the weight of remaining star is low and the "thrust" produced by the burning star can overpower what little momentum it has. Parlon is a chlorine donor, and a common one at that. To answer the question, yes both are needed when they are called for. It would be a good idea to get both, you will find yourself using them frequently. Most comps that call for Saran, which is also a chlorine donor, can be substituted with parlon with out much change in performance. Usually parlon is decently cheaper and easier to come by than Saran.

Seems he dont know different too ^^
Mumbles Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 This isn't the first time that I've heard someone mention that red gum is a binder. I went looking for the source of poor information, but couldn't find anything besides one or two youtube videos and some posts here. This video by USApyro in particular came up. There is also a result with a thread here from october 2012 where he states that "red gum is a great chlorine donor" and some some smiley face next to it. I figured he was being facetious or just kind of an ass and never thought anything of it. You will probably need both, or at least some sort of chlorine donor and a resin fuel, to make most stars.
FlaMtnBkr Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I think you meant chlorine donor and not binder in that first sentence Mumbles.
