Pwnany Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I was thinking about testing a few things like the power of flash powder or testing how much metal a COB would send everywhere. (Don't stop reading please! Im not a "OMFGLIEKLOLBBQ BOMB!!!!!!!" person. I want to see how dangerous these things are and hopefully be able to stop a few people doing unsafe things. Anyways I soon relised that I have absolutly no where to do it. Which is what I wanna know. Is it posible to make a safe and soundproof little testing box to try these kinds of things out? I have a old broken dish-washer I am able to build this off. Also I want to be able to make it have a little viewing window made out of something solid yet see-through. And maybe a few buttons for some LEDs and a little computer fan to blow away and smoke. Ofcouse I want it to be cheap but still safe, safety is my number one priority. Also a COB is definitely the most dangerous thing I will put in it. How would you go by sound-proofing and solidifying a dish-washer. (Not sure how solid they are. ) I was thinking about covering up the bottom with some ply-wood. (There are holes there for the water and what-not) and then make some-sort of box that's a bit bigger then it that I could fill with dirt so that the dishwasher has about 10cms of dirt around all its sides for sound-proofing and also it might make it more solid. However how would I sound-proof the lid and stop it from blowing off? I'm thinking about making some sort of latch so the lid will stay on. If you can give me some answers for those kinds of things it will be GREAT! All the LED's and the Fans I should be able to handle. Ohh and the viewing hole shouldn't be that hard. However what should I make it out of? Anyway sorry if I bored you. -Pwnany
ZoSo357 Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 This would likely be a bad idea, especially if you don't have anywhere to do it (AKA doing it in the city). I would be afraid of metal shrapnel penetrating the dishwasher. As for soundproofing, it would be very hard to do. Usually soundproofing is done with soundproofing foam, or acoustic foams which are basically big sheets of foam with hundreads of little prism's sticking out of it. You could use lexan or something similar to make blast shields, but obviously you can't seal this thing all the way around with it or you will have a huge pressure bomb on your hands. And naturally in an area with people around, you can't have any direction where the blast is allowed to aim it's shrapnel. This is hardly something you'll want to try in any city areas.
optimus Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 You want to 'test' how much metal a cob would send everywhere? I think it would send however much metal it was originally made up of everywhere! There you go - no need to carry out your experiment! Seriously though, I would advise you completely abandon your plans before you hurt yourself. I cannot see any reason why you would want to do this - the power of flashpowder has allready been tested exhaustively, and trust me, it's powerful. What you're describing is not a scientific test and would add nothing to the data allready in existance. And making cobs is an idiotic thing to do, even if it's supposed to be for an 'experiment'
Boomer Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Dishwasher = dumb idea. So is a COB. Still I answer ... You want several millimeters of solid steel or several inches of wood. Do it outside, and below ground. Easier to soundproof, and safer since you can get behind an additional tree in case it fails and blows out upwards. Good digging workout too! There's a topic at siencemadness about a blast box, not for CO-bombz but for blasting cap tests. Look there. Stay small.
Pwnany Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 Ok cool... Im not gonna try this then. It wasn't ment to be a scientific experiment, it was more of a thing for personal experice so I can have a better idea of how powerful it is... I allready knew that it was pretty damn powerful. Ohh and ofcoase I knew that was how much metal it would throw but what I ment was how small, sharp and fast will they be going. -Pwnany
Swany Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Someone already did that. I belive it made about 6 fragments, one up, and the other 5 fairly well distributed around the perimeter. They are quite nasty torn fragments with jagged edges, which would curve and tear flesh in a very unpleasant manner.
Mephistos Minion Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 I do believe it was DTP who did a test of an exploding COB. I seem to remember an animation with green and red neon lines on a black background or something like that. It was either him or Rat_Bastard.
