Short5 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I made up a set of stinger tools on a drill press. I drill a hole in some stock and epoxy in a stainless steel pin so I can fit it in my 1/2" inch chuck. I then either turn it free or for a bit more support I put a bronze bearing in a vice to hold the bottom. The bearing is cast with oil in it so it lubricates it's self as it wears. Using files I shape the parts, then sandpaper in finer and finer grit, and finally jewlers rouge paste to polish the parts. The spindle is bronze. It is all turned to the specs I found on the rocket sketcher site.
dagabu Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Beautiful, Short! You did a great job on the tooling, i bet you will get a lot of great stingers off this tooling too. Now we just need some video! -dag 1
Short5 Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 Thanks, Dag. I am amazed how high they go. I use a 3inch tube 3/4" i.d.. I will get a video. I am making some sorbitol fuel tonight to try in a daytime stinger. I am hoping it has enough thrust but just barely enough. I like those slow long rises.

Short5 Posted November 18, 2012 Author Posted November 18, 2012 (edited) A stinger vid Edit: That didn't work. I will host it someplace and try again... Edited November 18, 2012 by Short5
dagabu Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 A stinger vid Edit: That didn't work. I will host it someplace and try again... Put it on Youtube and mark it as unlisted then copy the URL and paste it as is on your post, it will show here but not on youtube itself without the URL. -dag
Short5 Posted November 18, 2012 Author Posted November 18, 2012 Thanks, Dag. I put it on my photobucket... I used a new powder mix I don't love. I granulated paulownia black powder +10% 80 mesh hardwood. The grains were surprisingly hard and I didn't like the way they consolidated. Also the stingers were pretty short lived due to the burn rate. I like my paulownia nozzeless +10% 80 mesh much better. It burns longer and prettier. Both these stingers have a dash of titanium in the last increment. One of them has a little flash in the space left on top. http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j23/shortwave5/?action=view¤t=g9stingerslittleg060.mp4 http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j23/shortwave5/?action=view¤t=g9stingerslittleg059.mp4
TritonPyro Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Hi guys, I have just joined and hope to learn a lot. Have been into PT for a few years and make gerbs, rockets and shells. I cannot get a stinger kit here ( the UK ) and I can make them fly pretty well but the drilling in the side of the casing can be iffy to say the least. The tooling itself is about $200.00 with the postage to the UK, but most do not want the hassle of shipping. Can anyone tell me where to get one made. Thanks. I hope everybody has a good new year. By the way, I really do live in a closed Victorian cemetery!
TritonPyro Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 A couple of people that are friends of mine are interested in stinger missile tooling. Does it have the vent guide for the drill bit? Thanks for the info!
