jacob Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 ok i'm going to texas in a few days to see my ant and she lives on a BIG! peice of land in the midle of nowere, i want to take some stuff down there but, i don't have the time to get any hdpe or fiberglass mortars like i should, and i don't want to use pvc, so i was thinking what if i stick the abs in a cofee can full of sand, would that help hold any pieces if it fragminted.
Mumbles Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 It's not any safer than PVC, and is actually structurally weaker.
Frozentech Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 ok i'm going to texas in a few days to see my ant and she lives on a BIG! peice of land in the midle of nowere, i want to take some stuff down there but, i don't have the time to get any hdpe or fiberglass mortars like i should, and i don't want to use pvc, so i was thinking what if i stick the abs in a cofee can full of sand, would that help hold any pieces if it fragminted. ABS splits into larger shards than PVC from what I have heard, and it is structurally weaker than PVC to start with. Al93535 had a fairly dramatic shot where a 4" shell with a large Ti bottom shot salute had a low break. What happened was that his ABS mortar split vertically from muzzle to near the bottom from the lift, and the shell, designed to travel up 300+ feet, lifted weak and broke about 75 feet up. In daylight he returned and found ABS shards the size of butcher knives scattered around the area. It doesn't sound like your shells are that large if you are sticking the tubes in a coffee can. How about try a 5 gallon plastic bucket, filled with sand, instead, and be well back from the shoots.
jacob Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 the problem is solved,i got 11'' piece of 2'' steel pipe out of a dich in my back yard [we have a big yard], pluged it with a piece of 2'' polyethylne rod and a bolt through it, and it seems to work great, i haveint really try'd it though
vongeetch Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Jacob, just to be on the safe side bury your pipe at least 2/3rds of the length in the ground. That will offer some protection if it should slit or shrap. Have a safe trip, be careful and have fun!
