Iron oxide in whistle mix?

Why is iron oxide included in whistle mix? Does it increase burn rate or does it change the sound of the whistle? The stuff burns so fast that I wouldn't think it would need a catalyst to increase burn rate...

 

Salicylate Mix

Potassium Perchlorate 75

Sodium Salicylate 25

Red Iron Oxide + 1

Petroleum Jelly + 4 (I use the mineral oil method.)

Both actually, different catalyst will cause they whistle tone to change pitches.

What other catalysts change the tone of the whistle? Different oxides, different amounts of oxide, or totally different types of catalysts?

 

Here is an interesting thought... Does iron oxide increase the burn rate of black powder in a rocket fuel grain?
