first try 2" shell

Given how small and anemic the burst is, it seems pretty clear that the BP is at fault. It's been the cause of most of the other threads in which you have problems. If you can't make good black powder, you will keep getting results like this.

As mumbles said, your black powder quality is lacking. Also looking at your black powder test, your black powder is defined lacking. It should go up in a big wooff, but yours is making a little phfff. When I first began pyro, my powder was even worse than yours, and I was using crappy charcoal (don't remember what type) and my ball mill was a really slow, really small lego ball mill that I made, and i didn't have ideal media. Are you using a ball mill? What charcoal are you using? Try using willow charcoal as it is regarded as one of the best.

PS. I agree with Dag, not the brightest way to light black powder

Salut, ton dernier mp a bugé je crois

i m agree too, you must always light any powder with a looong stick and in your garden, not on the table ^^

and your black powder can lift an aerial shell, that enough but you must compress it ;)

The BP you show in that video is mediocre. It could probably be made to work for larger shells. As you may soon find out, if you want to dabble in these very small devices, you're going to need top quality BP. The compression and pressure larger shells and mines provide is not there in micro pyrotechnics.

Nah, compression isn't necessary, but good milling is.

hi, this is true, it is not prudent to ignite the powder with a lighter. I did not do it on a table but on a wooden board that I use for my test. I just tried with powder that I left the ball mill for 20 h and is much faster.

You'll have to try it out, but honestly, it still doesn't look all that great.

I will not insist, I'll order the willow charcoal on the internet.

Sorry to be criticizing everything your doing, your "better" black powder still wont cut it unfortunately for a shell of this size. And your shell construction isn't the best either. Your method of stars and black powder in one hemisphere and just black powder in the other hemisphere will give you a "flowerpot" effect and won't be symmetrical, plus you also have to paste the shell with Kraft paper or gummed tape to get confinement so it actually explodes. Even if you had really good quality black powder inside your shell, because you haven't pasted it it wont explode and you'll only get a fizzle like you had in your original video.

Some problems, however, it helps me grow. All the reviews are good to learn new things. I will try my next shells with powder flash to break the shell. And I'll stick with craft paper and glue to paper. I will also reduce the length of time fuse. Thank you all for your valuable advice

It's still drying but my son made some BP this afternoon, three overall mesh size ranges:

What grain size is more suitable for shell 2 " ?

I heard that ~1mm grain sizes are optimal but i use about 3-4mm and it works fine for me.
