nater Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 The competition forums have been a little slow. The last one I remember was the two stage rocket with different motors and was a little more advanced. This time, lets see the best bottle rocket you have. For these purposes, a bottle rocket will be a 1/4" or 3/8" motor. For the motor, everything else is open. Any fuel, single or multiple stages, even clustered motors. Any means of stabalization is okay too. For the header, I would prefer to see everything homemade, but let's allow commercial flying fish fuse and dragons eggs if you wish. Enter as many times as you like by videoing your efforts and posting them. Deadline: Nov. 1, 2012 Prize: TBD, for now it will just be bragging rights.
dagabu Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Sounds like a fun little PGI project with the kids. I'm in! -dag
californiapyro Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 ooh me too! this will be a good time i'll put a prize on it, 1/2" go getter tooling set, shipped anywhere in the U.S. P.S. Nater's still the judge, i'll just send it to whoever he tells me won

nater Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 That is very generous, thanks! For the judging, I thought I would post a poll once people post a few videos. I know what I like, but I want to be fair.
dagabu Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Thanks for posting this Nate. It is so easy to make and even launch these small rockets and anybody with a hammer and tooling can make one. Even while I was packing for PGI last night, I was able to press several rockets for the competition and will video them (The Lord winning and the creek don't rise) this weekend. -dag
californiapyro Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 maybe a closed poll? so people can't see who voted for them or not
nater Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 A closed poll should work. I am working on a few dozen SBRs for PGI. BP, BP to different colors, BP to strobe, and most likely some hybrid and whistles too. My arbor press is getting a good workout. I think they'll all have a pinch of salute powder, I am mostly interested in the delay effects and to see if they will work before I try them in bigger motors.
graumann Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Well nater just crushed me, I thought I was going to have a chance at this one.Whistle? Strobe? Colours? So much for thinking a nice bushy tail could mix it
nater Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 I am not entering myself. Also, I feel like a well executed charcoal tail is better than a poorly executed color or strobing delay. I use the SBR set to test comps before pressing larger motors. Since they only use a few grams of comp, the penalty of failure is much lower, they don't annoy anyone, and the cost to test is much lower.

So much for thinking a nice bushy tail could mix it Don't be discouraged, I am planning on building them for fun and will pass on any prizes, I'll just post for pleasure. -dag
californiapyro Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) lively competition i'll start off with some 3/8" rockets, in no particular order: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdZcjY11SCk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_dH07D07kA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQUWgl8WHjk Edited September 2, 2012 by californiapyro

graumann Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I've made a couple of entries but still haven't been able to get a video that is anything beyond blackness with a some moving lens flare. Three difference recorders! Now I am starting to think I just know how to make a camera I'm told would work for fireworks stop functioning. The firefly and green spinner were my favourites CP.
californiapyro Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 set the autofocus to infinity Thanks I liked that firefly one a lot
dagabu Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I am pretty happy with my 1/4" strobes, I lit a half dozen on the rocket line at PGI, the first four CATOd as I has too much fuel on top of the spindle and the ones with only a few increments of fuel under the strobe worked very well. I still have a couple that I will take video of at the Fall shoot for your enjoyment. Nice rockets all!! -dag
nater Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Nice to see some videos, keep them coming! The Firefly and 2 stage with Farafalla were my favorite so far.
zvrh Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Nice! First one was pretty amazing! What was that "green fizzely thing" if may I ask?
californiapyro Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 thank you welcome to the forum! It was a 3/8" tube pressed on a stinger spindle with green star comp, quickmatched to the top of the core.
