taiwanluthiers Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 I guess we have to experiment to determine the best ratio... if it leaves any black solid, add more oxidizer. If it leaves any white stuff, add more charcoal. Problem is you need to experiment for each type of charcoal and even for each batch (because wood is different, even 2 pieces of wood from the same tree varies by 100%). The standard recipe is a good starting point, assuming reasonably fast charcoal is used. We can use the normal chemical stoiciometric ratio which is very close to 75:15:10 but since charcoal isn't all carbon, it's hard to say.
