Pirotecnia Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 The only oxidizing agent that i have access is kno3, then, i would like to know if there's some composition for blue stars based on it and copper salts. Thanks!
optimus Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Never tested these myself, and I wouldn't expect to get much of a blue colour, but there are a few formulas here if you do a search, a couple here: Hardt Blue #6Potash 65Copper oxychloride 12-1/2Lactose 12-1/2Saran 5Dextrine 5 Potassium nitrate.................................40Sulfur............................................12Mealpowder........................................40Copper-ammonium nitrate...........................30Charcoal..........................................10Rosin.............................................5
Potassiumchlorate Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Hardt Blue #6 is a really good one. Unfortunately for our friend the "potash" mentioned in it is KClO3, which he doesn't have. But try the second one. I was just about to post it myself. Copper-ammoniumnitrate is probably not available for him either, but he could try copper carbonate, copper(II)oxide etc instead.

Oops, I obviously didn't read the thread too well. I think there should be a few more buried on the forums too. Pirotecnia, you might also want to look into Zinc/Copper powders for making colours without perchlorates or other nitrates.

Short5 Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 Do a search for Zinc or Granite stars. They use Zinc along with basic BP chems. The blue is a light pastel kind of blue and they are heavy but I like them and they are easy to make.

taiwanluthiers Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Where are you located? In the US you can get most chemicals, and I thought in Taiwan I could not get any chlorates and perchlorates either, but it just turns out that chemical shops have them, they just don't advertise them because not too many people seem to buy them. If you are located in Europe there are many EU based suppliers that will have what you need.
Potassiumchlorate Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 He lives in India. If I remember correctly, they have very harsh chemical laws since the colonial time. The guys that have the least money and access to chemicals seem to be the ones that are putting the most effort into the hobby. In America and western Europe we are simply spoiled.
taiwanluthiers Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Man that sucks... maybe time to make a chlorate/perchlorate cell. Good thing potassium chlorate/perchlorate barely dissolves in water. Not as bad in Taiwan but there are no dedicated pyro supplier in Taiwan (that I know of) because there are VERY harsh weapon laws (as in life, or more than 5 years of prison term for possession of any illegal weapons). However fireworks law seems lax if not enforced at all. Penalties in most cases are fines, arrests and prison terms are rare unless there are serious public safety issues (such as illegal firework factory). So I can't exactly go to a gun shop and pick up a can of FFFG... Instead I go to chemical suppliers to get chems, but most of them actually caters to food and cosmetics as well as paint and other industrial uses, so naturally they don't stock chemicals that have little use outside of pyrotechnics like AP. Potassium nitrate is easy since its used as food additives and fertilizer. Benzoic acid, sodium and potassium benzoates are very available and very cheap since they are also food additives, but KP is a little problematic to find (somebody does sell them, but expensive as hell), Pot. and Sodium chlorates are sold, and half as much as KP (sodium chlorate is even cheaper) as they do make good weedkiller. The problem is when I ask for AP everyone knows what they're used for, and obviously most won't support that. Non chem pyrotechnic items are really hard to get, firework vendors won't sell visco fuse (all I managed to get was paper firecracker fuse which works as a quickmatch) or tubes, but only completed firework. However its easy enough to roll your own. I ordered some from Freaky Dutchman I just hope it arrives at my doorstep safely and not end up in Davy Jone's Locker (I think its going by boat). You know you could really work on Chrysanthemum or something like that... probably looks just as good as colored star. Right now I am just trying to experiment around and see what palette I have to work with before I start making devices, because I don't really have a reliable fuse until I get the package. For NC lacquer just use the lacquer you get from the hardware store, not acrylic lacquer but nitro lacquer. I just use the same lacquer that I finish instruments with. I also sub red gum with shellac because I happen to have them.
Potassiumchlorate Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Gunlaws are there to keep status quo. You can't overthrow a government with fireworks, so even an authoritarian/totalitarian state doesn't have to have harsh firework laws. Chlorates and perchlorates can be hard to get in such a country, though, since they can actually be used in HE bombs. Chlorates used to be available in weed killers before, usually sodium chlorate.
Zumber Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 How did the test go? What shade of blue was it?blue was somewhat pale than perchlorate and star was slow burning. 1
taiwanluthiers Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I am not even sure if legal gun ownership would be such a good thing in Taiwan, given the people's often blatant disregard for basic safety rules. Chlorates and perchlorates are easy to get, just that not all chemical shop sells them because not many people use them. The only everyday use I can think of for chlorates are weed killers. Otherwise almost every sparkler I can think of contains potassium perchlorate so if someone's really desperate to make HE bombs they can be easily extracted from sparklers. I even found a bottle of Picric acid at the chemical shop I bought my KP at... I was a little scared to touch it to be honest...
rustam867684 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 (edited) What is prime with BP??? Shellac what is it????? Edited November 2, 2016 by rustam867684
OldMarine Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 BP prime is coating a finished star with a rough coating of black powder to insure ignition.Shellac is a natural resin used to finish wood. It comes from India and Thailand: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac
rustam867684 Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I try this composing material.it's not work...
