Alan Yate's scratch igniter comp?

Recommended Posts

Alan's site is down, hope all is okay. He had a formula for a mix that ignited when struck on a match box. Does anyone know what it was? from memory it was Potassium chlorate, antimony trisulfide, and air float charcoal in a NC slurry. I don't remember the amounts or if that was all that was in it although I think so. Any help appreciated.

Hey mate,

I don't have Yates' formulae, but here is a link to thegreenman's website.

http://www.thegreenm.../pfp/other.html

That page details 4 scratch igniter comps, and a heap of other great stuff.

Hope this helps!

Cheers, Seb.

Thanks for the link but I am looking for Yate's mix in particular.

Not sure if this will help you, but here it is:

Composition of Commercial Safety Matches and Strikers Component %

Match

animal (hide) glue 9-11

starch 2-3

sulfur 3-5

potassium chlorate 45-55

neutralizer (ZnO, CaCO3) 3

diatomaceous earth 5-6

other siliceous fillers (powdered glass, "fine" silica) 15-32

burning-rate catalyst (K2Cr2O7 or PbS2O3) to suit

water-soluble dye to suit

Strikers

animal glue or casein 16

red phosphorus 50

calcium carbonate 5

powdered glass 25

carbon black 4

It's 7:3:1 Potassium Chlorate:Charcoal:Antimony Trisulfide.

Thank you Mumbles. I see you pulled it up through some sort of archive. Any idea what is up with his site?

What I like about this mix is it contains no sulfur and must be scratched on a match striker like a safety match. It seems relatively safe to me.

Thanks, good info, but the one I wanted in particular is the one Mumbles linked to. I like to make smokes and have made pull igniters with matches as shown in a tutorial on here but had an idea for a simpler device using the mixture quoted rather than match heads.

This might also interest you.

Friction striker paint for roller applicator:

Red phosphorus 50 – 70 %

Poly(vinyl/acetate) 10 – 20 % (as dry solids)

Inert fillers 10 – 40 %

Getting RP is a GIANT regulatory PITA.

But, if you can acquire it.

RP in a PVA solution painted right over the top of little short Emory cloth strips make a fine striker.

Well it works. It is a bit more sensitive than a match on the striker and will light visco when painted on the outside of it.

Antimony Trisulfide is optional, but makes it a bit more sensitive. It can be left out, perhaps giving a somewhat safer and cheaper mixture at the expense of having to strike harder or a few times to get reliable ignition.

I've never saw a formula without sulphur or antimonsulfide - any experience how good it works on commercial matchboxes surface?
