warthog Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 For my next dumb question, , I have seen videos of "Chuffer" rockets. I like how they sound, the steam engine thing is appealing. How is this done? I am guessing it is a type of fuel? In looking through my books and online resources though I see no references to "Chuffer Rocket Fuels." At first I thought it might be a by product of strobe fuel, is this right? I ask because the videos show no sign of the engine's light strobing, only the sound. So maybe it is how you make the engine itself? Maybe special tooling? So then, how do you make these? Are they less powerful as far as lifting ability than say a regular BP core burner? If someone would be so kind as to help me with the information I need, I would be appreciative. I am still making little bottle rockets for now, wonder if you can make them chuff? Anyway, please tell me how to make rockets chuff. Thanks in Advance!
dagabu Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Warthog, Danny Cregan put a great tutorial together on his site for these rockets: LINK This video is one of my red rockets that it's brothers flew in the opening ceremony of PGI last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXGrpxZhz40 The brothers fly at 1:10 in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqmlbA_oolU The chuffing is kept to a minimum in these rockets but can easily be changed to a fast pop-pop-pop sound with a simple tweaking. -dag
nater Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 do you want to make the red chuffers, or do you want BP to chuff?
warthog Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) I would have to say BP at first but I am sure to wan t to move on to other things. I will give Mr. Creagan's site a good going over. He seems to have added a few things since my last visit. He really has a great site too, second only to Skylighter and first in more advanced things. YOU Da' MAN! So do only the red ones chuff? Not the green and yellow ones? Hmmm... Edited March 9, 2012 by warthog
dagabu Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 No, they all chuff if you want them to. I like the huge colored tail they have, that's why I make them. I try to eliminate all the chuffing. Dan T's #6 chuffs nicely... LINK Dan C LINK -dag
warthog Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) To each their own, I like the chuffing. Of course I also like the colored tails. Since these comps are basically flash with a chlorine donor though, I don't feel comfortable making them while I am alone. At least until I get more comfortable with these, they will have to wait until I find another pyro-buddy. warthog Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 whatever you say, I was speaking to the making of them anyway, not the launching. That is all done elsewhere anyway since this area has some folks who would rather not hear the noises. So in the interest of intra-neighborhood kindness, I keep thing to a minimum if I light it here at all. I am no going to go out of my way to piss them off, even if I have the right to do it.

I have universal tooling. I'm also assuming that this stuff needs to be pressed?
