oldguy Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) I horse traded a couple BM jars for some Ti & Mg etc.Besides the metals, in the batch of things I recieved in return was several lbs of smokeless powder (Hi-Skor 700X) Thinking of making some NC Lacquer with it.Indivdual grain size is about 1/16th inch. Is there a safe way to reduce it to a very fine powder.Or, is that even needed?. Edited March 5, 2012 by oldguy

Arthur Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Add 10% NC powder and 90% Acetone into a screw top jar and just leave it! It dissolves slowly and if you leave it for an hour or so it should be about dissolved. Choice of solvents gives various drying rates Acetone is the fastest, Amyl alcohol, and I think Amyl acetate will make slower drying mixes, which may be appropriate where you live -specifics on this I'd ask Mumbles.

warthog Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 you want single base smokeless for NLC production, double base has too much nitroglycerine in it. Now mind you, it isn't like you can just pour the nitroglycerine off of the mix and use this if that is what you're thinking, but it will effect the way it works. The added nitro is good for things like dragon eggs, it adds a bit of crackle/sizzle to them when they go off that isn't there without it. However, it isn't a good thing to have a lot of in regular NCL for binding and priming.
dagabu Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Keep in mind that there is a lot of "other stuff" mixed into single base smokeless powder too and there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that it can block fire. -dag
Mumbles Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 While I would prefer the pure fluff, many have used double and single based powders with success in the past. I guess it's one of those things that you'll never know until you try it for yourself. I'm sure like most everything else smokeless varies greatly from brand to brand and grade to grade.
DanielC Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Try to find a single base that is highest in NC with as few additives as possible. There are a few that are 95+% NC. I have some double base, but still haven't used it.
