50caliber Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 I read on the uk rocketry fourm http://www.ukrocketry.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=1952 that you arn't supposed to mix fuels and oxidizers but why is this, ive mixed KNO3 and Surcose all the time. Whats the real story?
rocket Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 On the thread you posted it was bout KNO3/sugar propellant, what I think there getting at is its dangerous to melt the to together incase of accidental ignition. Also there are posts about not ball milling fuel/oxidizer, the reason for this is the accidental ignition as well. If you just mill the to separately the danger is gone. But we still mill BP. oh well
50caliber Posted October 19, 2006 Author Posted October 19, 2006 oh ok, so ball milling KNO3 and surcose is just as "safe" as milling blackpowder
rocket Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Well I can’t see it lighting, but there still is that tiny chance of a spark like in milling BP. KCLO3/KCLO4 however should never be milled a fuel(s)
50caliber Posted October 19, 2006 Author Posted October 19, 2006 oh sweet as, well i cant get KCLO4 or KCLO3 so i dont have a problem there. i just got some lead media for my ball mill so I was just wondering. If I wanted to be very safe would I ball mill each chemical seperatly and then mix them in a jar just by shaking them around?
joe609 Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 To be honest if you set out everything you need and make sure everything is as safe as it can be then milling them together wouldnt be anymore dangerous than BP. Not sure how good the powder will be just by mixing them in a jar altough there probably isnt much in it with the comp you are making
