What is the optimal RPM range for a star roller?

Somewhere between the 40 - 80 RPM range, mine runs at about 60 RPM usually.

I'm not really sure there is an optimum speed. There are so many variables: angle of the drum, shape and size of the drum itself, size of the stars to be rolled and probably a bunch of other stuff.

I have looked everywhere for trying to find the same thing. I have seen formulae for ball mills, but not star rollers. It seems the consensus is that as long as the

stars cascade properly that is what you want. Sounds simple enough. I use a poly drum concrete mixer and it runs two speeds 25 and 50. I run it at 50 and it works well

for what I need. I looked around and most say 30-60 usually works best, but if your drum has a big flat side you could go less than that. I wish I had a variable speed

so I could tune it in for what I was rolling. Maybe that will be a future project. Anyway, I hope this helps a little bit.

Btw here is a link for a three speed dc motor for 20 bucks http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/DCM-434/12-VDC-GEARHEAD-MOTOR-3-SPEED/1.html

I guess the consensus SO-FAR is a motor rigged for adjustable variable speed say from ballpark range of 30 to 100 RPM?

I vote for 60 rpm. My 90v dc motor I salvaged with speed controller is max 80 rpm. The speed controller helps slow it down once the stars grow larger. You can get away with 40-50 rpm if your angle is higher imo. This is based on a 5 gal bucket size roller. Edited by TheArchitect23

OOPS! I didn't read the title very well.

I have a 60 RPM gear box on mine and it is a just a tad slow for my liking. With a variac, I can speed it up to 66-67 RPM and the stars roll much better. I have a 16" bowl that i use to roll stars.

A clear end plate on a star roller would make it difficult to spray the stars ;)

I have a variable speed star roller but i prefer to use an 11" slick kart tyre on the ballmill in place of the mill jar.
