JFeve81 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Hey guys, I've been thinking lately about something I can make with my still limited amount of pyro knowledge and I kept landing on a cake me and my brother did a BOGO purchase on 10 or so years ago. I think it was called Blue Dragonfly or Firefly or something. Some kind of Blue fly. LOL. Haven't been able to find it online anywhere. But from what I remember is it was pretty simple. When fired it shot what appeared to be a blue colored star into the sky that then turned into a hummer type effect. I don't have the chemicals for any blue stars ATM but figured I can test the design anyway with charcoal based stars. What I figure I can do is use one of my 3/8" ID x 5/8 OD" tubes cut down to 2.5" in length. Quick pic below. But basically when fired it lights fire to the star (compacted in the end of the tube), fire gets transfered to the hummer section via pasted in BM on the outside of the shell, and then at a much later date it will be finished off with a small salute. Does anyone think it will work as I have planned or know of a better way of doing this? I have some BP milling right now so I can get a couple test pieces made tommorrow and hopefully fired Monday (100% chance of rain).
NightHawkInLight Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 That will work fine. You could just paste a thick layer of BP slurry over the vent for the hummer. That should be enough delay after it leaves the gun before it starts spinning. You don't need a clay plug between the hummer fuel and the report, just let it ignite when the fuel reaches it. If you don't want it to ignite right away, ram a little delay comp where you now have clay in the drawing.
Col Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 I haven`t tried using a delay on tailed hummers but it sounds like a plan. I find the tail comp can seperate during the lift (even when its pressed hydraulically) so the heavy prime delay method NightHawk recommended may be more reliable than the bm. If they don`t go exactly to plan you`ll still have a good effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ofMvq8Tcfohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRlvO3x7U6w
JFeve81 Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 Made up a test insert today. Pretty much built it how I was thinking. From bottom up. 3/8" of C8, 1/4" Clay, 1" of TT Hummer, 1/4" Clay, some FFg BP for a weak salute. I need to dial in my timing alot. The 3/8" star section will work with slightly more lift and a longer mortar to shoot it up alittle higher, The hummer part (for the effect I'm looking for anyway) needs to be cut in half. Maybe slightly more. I added the BP at the end just to see when the salute section would go off. Not bad though. At least it worked. Now to get some more chems so I can make blue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzpCdu5T8uQ
