athlon Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Is this good enough clearance? The tube I.D. is 50mm.
AdmiralDonSnider Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 It´s a bit on the generous side, but I think it will work - probably with some extra lift. Consider the use of a lift disk, pushed down between the lift powder and the device. Basically just a thin cardboard disk with a 3mm (small) central hole, matching the tube ID in diameter. This will greatly improve the lift efficiency and assure a good height despite of the clearance.
NightHawkInLight Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I wrap shells like that in a few turns of paper towel to close the gap.
dagabu Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Is this good enough clearance? The tube I.D. is 50mm. 5% is recommended so after adding the paste wrap and leader, you should be perfect! -dag
Mumbles Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I really can't tell from looking at it. My shells of that caliber come out around 47mm before the leader and final wrap. My guess is that it will be fine. It looks like maybe 5 or 6mm gap, which will close up after the leader and stuff. I also don't know if I agree with the paper towel recommendation. That would probably introduce a fair amount of smouldering fallout on the lift that I like to avoid. In the future you can make your final shell size larger by increasing the size of the initial former. I use a 1.75" former for this size of shell for instance.
athlon Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 (edited) With the 44mm former I get a gap of about 2-3mm with only the casing, no spiking or pasting. That's why I made the smaller 41mm former. Shell from 44mm former does not fit in the tube after spiking and pasting. athlon Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 I made the casing a little thinner with the 44mm former and after pasting the shell seems to fit.2 layers of kraft paper for casing, spiking and another two layers of paste. Hopefully it will work now!
Mumbles Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Sounds good. I probably should have told you what I use before. I use 2 turns of manila file folder material and 2 turns of 70lbs paper. I also do use 20lb hemp twine to spike, which is fairly thin. If you use a thicker liner, it'd be better to back spin for the reasons you mentioned. This is all pasted in with 2 turns of 30lb paper.
