Thanks! - A commercial shell effect called Corolla, I think they also call it something like Golden Flower or something, Ill get a video of one launched normally one of these nights Edited May 22, 2013 by Haunchbones

hughesdo
I'm a newbie here. I mostly want to read and learn. I've got some know how. I've been studying this art and science for some 25+ years. Mostly rocket candy in the below URL. I hope you enjoy. I have not filmed other activities. I also did a little CGI green screen in about two of the videos, to make them a little funny for your avrage youtuber's. I think most will see that the explosions are fake. I added them in from green screens that I downloaded. I'm a little crazy but not that crazy. Those explosions parts are not real, come on it's kinda of cheesey, I know. please no flames, heehee. The others are real no added sounds. They really sound that powerful taking off! My mic on my camera really captures the sound of thrust good but nothing close to beeing there live. what a rush. https://www.youtube.com/user/DonaldPHughes/videos P.S I've been using mighty putty to create my nozzles. Seems to work a little better than cement or durhams rockhard. These rockets are just stump remover (potassium nitrate) and sorbitol 70/30.. and a pinch of rust for extra speed. lrumpa
Nice to meet you Smelt! I really liked your two stage video... I'm a newbie as well. I have been working with PVC for years, primarily rcandy.. My most amusing rocket so far was probably my low pressure motor I used for a bicycle.. I worked on it for a couple of years before I felt it was safe enough for someone to drive it.. The trick was the consistency of thrust and making sure the failure modes were away from the occupant. I had a lot of sensors on that bike, multiple command centers a lead vehicle and a helicopter for emergency as well as aerial footage. I use durhams for my I and J motors and hydrolic for any of my larger motors.. You should check out the pvc-only googlegroup, not a lot of action over there these days, but there are some pretty impressive members..

ddewees
I need to figure out how to speed up the strobe rate... I have a 1000g batch, and it's much too slow. Maybe I can just use less, or make another batch with only 325 mg/al... and mix the two???
jl88
Not the fastest rocket, but this is an Rcandy 3lb rocket with a 5% titanium added to the delay charge above the core of the rocket. Seems to give a good tail all through flight. I used to add titanium to the entire fuel, but you can save a lot doing it this way. This is only my 2nd (successful) 3lb sugar rocket. It took a while to get the nozzle diameter right and now I need to dial in the delay for the header. This one went too early... My first 3lb went too late. The shell is only 4 green parlon stars with BP burst charge so that I don't waste too many stars :-)

ddewees
That rocket used the 3lb Super BP tooling from Firesmith Tools. The whistle is: Potassium Perchlorate 64Potassium Benzoate 32Copper Oxychloride 2Petroleum Jelly 5 I used that WECCO stuff from pyrochemsource. The strobe fuel is: Ammonium Perchlorate (90-100 micron) 60Barium Sulfate 15Magnalium (80-200 mesh) 17Magnalium (200-325 mesh) 8Potassium Dichromate 5Petroleum Jelly 2 I probably should have just used the 200-325 sized mesh. I tried another one, this time with a small header, and it planted itself back into ground while it was still strobing. The header never went, which was a flash report using that blue alumimum. I'm not sure if the stuff didn't ignite, or if I may have busted the header off with it coming back to the ground while still strobing. WonderBoy
Looked like a nice rocket dd! And the green was cool too!You might also switch to 76-23-1-3 whistle to get it up there higher. The 64-32 mix is pretty slow. How much strobe was pressed over the spindle? jl, a nice plume of Ti there. How'd it pop the header so early? ddewees
There was strobe fuel the entire length of the third rammer, and about 1/4 inch above the spindle. I will try with hotter whistle... thanks.

PyroPadawan
I already posted videos of 4oz whistle rockets in your previous post but here are some 1lb'ers. 1lb Sodium Salicylate1lb Sodium Salicylate-Sodium Benzoate1lb Sodium Benzoate The first one is a pure Salicylate rocket (I hate these, too whiny).Second one is 2 increments of Salicylate with the rest Benzoate. And the third is a pure Sodium Benzoate rocket. These are my favorite, it's almost like they're spitting at you when they first take off, and Benzoate is a longer burning rocket for the same size. and just like before, here's how I make these:You're totally right about that Sodium Benzoate rocket. That thing was amazing. Ectremely long burn time. *Nice "little" report at the end of the flight*
