I've been trying out some new charcoal streamer comps for some big shells I'm planning on building later this year. The comets will either be strapped to the top of a rocket or inside a 12" shell so I'm not worried about the long burn time these ground tests indicate.

3" Shimizu Charcoal Streamer

3" C4 Silver Streamer

cplmac,

Those look nice...but I'm curious; the "Shimizu" streamer had a yellower head then the "C4" streamer. I only know C6, C8, CoM, and TT as the more commonly published charcoal streamer comps by Shimizu. Is "C4" one of your own formulas following the oxidizer to charcoal ratio that gives C6 & C8 their names? Or am I misunderstanding your video file names?

BTW, the tones of the whistle rocket video you posted on Jan 3 reminds me of a song off of Goldfrapp's "Felt Mountain" disc...very cool.

The C4 streamer is a concoction of my own. C4 is a nickname a lot of my buddies call me so I figured what the hell, may as well start using that as the name for any comps I make. I'm not sure why the Shimizu appeared to have a more yellow head, but it used airfloat charcoal and sulfur exclusively for fuel, the C4 streamer used those and 80 mesh and 36 mesh charcoal. The silver streamer used 40-270 mesh Al from Firefox and Al turnings from when I made my whistle spindles on the lathe, which I put in a margarita blender for a few minutes to make smaller. The two charcoal streamers are bound with SGRS, the silver is bound with CA, but definitely not enough.

Haha, that was my brother. But it pretty much summed up that flight to a tee so I left it in there.

3" whistle rocket with 21 pound dummy head, Houston we have a problem...

This was the test bed for my soon to be 12" shell rocket. The good news is now I know I can lift the shell, and how to make it happen without incident. The bad news is I just spent $50 worth of fuel to find out what not to do.

Great googley moogley Cplmac, those rockets are crazy, do you have any idea why it CATO'd? and can you imagine what would happen if one of them went off in the press, how do you press them?

I don't think it CATO'd. I think as the core burned out wards and the chamber pressure increased, the delay/bulkhead was also getting thinner and the chamber pressure pushed the fuel through the top of the rocket. I'll know for sure when I find the remains, but I'm about 99% sure.

cplmac,

Love the flag in the background...makes me feels so patriotic. I think I'm humming "Hail to the Chief"...Dum, da da dum, da da dum da da dum dum...

Seriously, 21lbs. is real rocket mojo!

I'm real happy with the thrust, the total rocket weight was 35.7 pounds, the stick was 2 pounds, the motor was 12.4, and the head was 21.3. The flag in the background was icing on the cake for me too Q, I can't wait for the first club shoot of the season. I probably won't make it to the PGI this year so I'm going to have to put the shellket up at a club shoot.

Well I appreciate the compliments BlueSquib but the truth is I just scaled up production nothing special. The ceiling was 1000' so I'm sure the "second moon" was probably just some type of reflection coming through the clouds.

A friend of mine suggested that I should join the modern era and post videos of some of the stuff that I do (tips hat to the Queen of the Black Forest ;) ). Since I live in a Unibomber-like shack 542 yards past the end of a dirt road and don't have phone service and I have to hike 14 miles to town to post, I've been lazy and haven't gotten around to putting up any videos until now. (O.K., I'm on dial-up, but that's about the same thing, isn't it?)

There's nothing spectacular here, just a starmine, a rocket, and a ball shell. for what it's worth......

2" starmine, tigertail rolled on granite cores. It needs more TT.

2-1/2" D-1 ball shell. BP on millet, plus 1 gm. whistle break-bag

1lb. coreburner with a 2" ball shell header. Redstar #3 cut stars w/Veline superprime. BP break.

Nice break on that shell! I liked the "hang" on the granite stars in the mine, too. Thanks for sharing.

qwezxc12, thanks. I really appreciate the bon-mots from someone so much more advanced than I. The whistle "kicker" in the break seems to make all the difference for me; it gives a much broader and more symmetrical break. I'm not sure why the better symmetry, but I surmise that it speeds up the break so that any inconsistencies in my pasting are less important, if that makes any sense.

Stinger: Very nice rocket!

hst45: You hit the Trifecta there!

Thanks for the Easter Show, guys! ;)
