Mumbles Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Thought you guys might like to see some tests I did not too long ago. 1 and 2 are crossettes that didn't crossette. I think I need a thicker disk on the top. They didn't shatter, jet, or break, so it's hard to tell what actually went wrong. 3, and 4 are planet shell inserts for a sun and planet shell, 1 1/4" ID, 1 1/2" OD. I think they break pretty well for such a small shell. The colors are kinda dim though. I have 7 different brighter colors for the actual shell. One had a bit of flash powder in the break, but I can't tell which one, they were broke with 4FA. 5 is a brocade star I made into a mine to test. It wasn't intentionally a fan cake, but it sure turned out that way. Before you ask, no you can't have the formula. 6 was a 5" planet test that didn't work so well. I made two, and of course the one that worked awesome didn't get on video due to ignition difficulties. One was broke with KP, and the other with Polverone and flash. I couldn't tell which is which, so a further test must be done. http://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly1.wmvhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly2.wmvhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly3.wmvhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly4.wmvhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly5.wmvhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/mumbly6.wmv
cplmac Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 The color changer to crackle was very nice. Nice brocade mix. Whats the formula? I can't watch the .MOV files for some reason.
rocket Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I'm gathering you got Quick time player. You could try saving the links if you have already tried that.
cplmac Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Yeah I've got quick time pro 7 and I saved the links. Not sure what's going on but they won't play in VLC either.
cplmac Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 First rocket on the new homemade tooling. 6lb Whistle
rocket Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Just some test fountains and a roman candle. MgAl fountain 1 MgAl fountain 2 Roman candle
cplmac Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 6 pound whistle on home made tooling I pressed this one a little closer to standard specs. Really nice job on the roman candle rocket!
rocket Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Thanks mate, I was pretty happy with that one. It was knocked up in 10mins and fired. I should try some larger ones. I’ll tell you what you've really masted whistle rockets now nice job, I liked the multiple salute for the headed.
cplmac Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I finally got a girandola built proper and operational. My first real girandola no head
h&k machineguns Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 That was pretty cool. I had never seen one of those before. Seems every time someone over at Passfire posts one, my computer won't play it. I had always wondered what one was.
qwezxc12 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Awesome. Congratulations on the flight. I hope you recovered it intact? Those can be complicated beasts. Did you see Ned Gorski's girandola video from PGI?...or maybe you were there to see it in person? Totally wicked, like a combination multi-stage Saxon/wheel driver that takes off. It's hosted over here:http://pyrotechnics.no-ip.org/files/
cplmac Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I did recover it intact, it landed twenty feet away from us. Ned's girandola was awesome. I plan on making two more tomorrow, one of them with a head and the other a bouncing girandola which is basically a two stage girandola. I'll get the videos up assuming they work.
Wyvern Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I had a nice little display last night, 2 Perc/Sodium Benzoate whistle rockets with Ti which i finaly managed to get right after i dried out the Benzoate in the oven for 30 mins before making the mix. There are also some nice shell videos afterwards, the first one was awesome to see in real life as the camera didnt pick up the trail from the crossettes of which only of jetted. Also the last shell had the stars blow blind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIQnB6BUKVw
cplmac Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Nice work! A lot of the shells looked like TT, probably the craptacular compression YouTube uses.
fizeau Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Cpl, I´m curios to see the construction. Please post a prefire pic if you have one.
cplmac Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Squib it wasn't a piece of the frame but some of the quickmatch piping that was taped to the frame flailing about. Here are links to three before fire pics. I made the frame out of a 5 gallon bucket so it looks a bit shoddy. The frame weighed 144 grams+motors. Gonna try and make one tonight with standard BP and put a head on it. http://pyrobin.com/files/p8190006.jpghttp://pyrobin.com/files/p8190007.jpghttp://pyrobin.com/files/p8190008.jpg
Mumbles Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I noticed some extra holes in there for possibly 8 motors. Anyway, if you wanted to get the weight down even more, you could drill some additional larger holes in the areas where the motors arn't. I've been meaning to get some rocketry experience in so I could give some girandolas a shot here soon.
cplmac Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I designed it to build a bouncing girandola, so yeah there are holes for 8 drivers. I'm thinking about putting one together tonight. If I do I'll get the video up ASAP.
pudidotdk Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I'm making a girandola using a frame painting sticks http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/9907/dsc01814lw9.jpg http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/8386/dsc01816nn6.jpg
cplmac Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Cool! I just found some 16" sonnet tube in the garage, I'm cutting a 4" ring out. I did the math, it will weigh in right around 1100 grams, with a circumference of just under 50" there should be plenty of room to get the needed drivers to lift it. I tested a BP/Ti driver tonight and it was MUCH stronger than the overfueled girandola driver fuel, so I might use some of those. The burn duration seemed comparable. I've decided to hold off on firing that girandola until Saturday, I'm running low on tubes and it took a fair amount of time to make.
cplmac Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 3" ID Ti Whistle To Report I feel obligated to put all videos in this thread....
Nemo_Tenetur Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Veeery nice! How far away were you with your camera from the launching place?
cplmac Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 About 250 yards, crank up the volume on this one.
h&k machineguns Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 Very cool. Hard to believe you were that far away until you realize how big that motor was. Ever think about trying one without TI in it ?
cplmac Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 The first one I built on Thursday had no Ti. My goal was loud loud loud. Pretty close on the decibel level though between 0 and 5 percent Ti.
